Son of a .......... Darn it Porter Cable.

Huh, with the 6" setup mine just jiggle under that much pressure so they never spent much time under that particular stress. But then I *did* kill my first PC sorta fast, never hurt the (5") backing plate though...

Heh heh, I might've given you a run for your money there, seeing as how I killed the clear on my MPV in one spot overdoing it with the PC ;) My paint guy was incredulous that I did that kind of damage with "just the PC".

Heh heh, I'm probably one of those people! I did OK getting 2-3K scratches out of Audis and GMs via PC with 1Z Pasta Intensive. Sure took forever though.

That's a while if you were hammering on it that hard. I never kept track of the hours, but my first PC seemed to die kinda soon and I figured it was because I was leaning on it so hard (that was with 5" pads back around maybe 1990).

Haha, the PC is idiotproof unless its in the right hands to push it past its limits! :buffing:

I logged my time based on my car and clients vehicles. For some reason my method of polishing worked best as it gave a 95% defect free finish without the need to follow up with a polishing step so I stuck with it. I'm guessing that the pressure from mine and Kevin Brown's method will shorten the lifespan of a lowly PC quite rapidly. I'd test it again but I don't have warranty anymore on the PC after I got it back from the shop (3 weeks for parts since it was such a rare occurance!) :LOLOL

Hopefully they just replace it. What happen to the good Ole days where you can call em up and say "Hey this is no good" and they just replace the unit?!?!?!?!?!

Barry Theal- It'll be interesting to hear how PC responds.

[Insert lecture Re that missing receipt :nono Stuff that sort of stuff in a file drawer. ]

JohnKleven- You're not kidding about the durability of a Cyclo! And yeah, unlike the PC it's just one of those "I like using it!" types of tools.

With the products now on the market, I wonder how Barry would like one

That's why I've started calling stuff "Accumulator-proof" instead ;)

Barry, Can you tell us approx how many cars you have polished via the KBM with this machine?

One of the downsides of the KBM. It's effective for what it is, but it is damaging machines in the long run.

You are basing this from which facts?

The only real downfall to the KBM is abundance of misinformation concerning the method.

To simplify it, the KBM is really about pad priming and using moderate, not excessive pressure. Here is a thread that details how to prime the pad:

http://www.autopia.org/forum/machine-polishing/116716-look-into-pad-priming.html

The use of moderate pressure is nothing new. In fact, Mike Phillips documented the use of moderate pressure on MOL long before the term "KBM" was even formed. The pad should still be turning 2-3 times a second.

Dang Barry, that's pretty unfortunate. $500 is a drop in the bucket compared to if this would have happened during the F-40 you were doing!! I hope PC helps you out.

Don't you know that it's much easier to knock something when you can't figure it out instead of learn the right way instead? Who said that nothing is idiot proof...they'll just keep creating smarter idiots. Or something to that effect.

PC is solid. Its just that a few people are unlucky thats all. Whether it be machine defects or whatnot, its bound to happen to some people

To sum it up, Im pretty pissed with the qaulity of this new Porter Cable 7424xp. Luckily this car is a dealer car going to an Auction next week, so he said to touch it up, but I wanted to pass this on with you gentleman. I will be contacting porter cable directly along with photos to see what they have to say. I will update you all. Have a great day.

I was trying to decide between the XP and G110v2. :wall I'm glad I found this post. That hollow shaft doesn't look good at all.

Isn't this the PCXP you bought at that hardware store for a fraction of what it should normally cost??? Maybe it was a cheap knock off or something. Not sure.. but it would explain things a bit if it was.

I'll save Barry some typing...

-It was a geniune PC and PC is taking care of it (finally) at no charge.

-It's apparently not a problem that every PCXP user needs to worry about.

-The Flex and the Griot's are completely different (forced rotation vs. not).

-Barry uses the PC/Griot's when he considers that to be the right tool for the job; not like he's retired his rotary or anything like that.
