Somebody called the town on me!

I was just thinking about this kind of stuff, the state or county here just recently has imposed all kinds of regulations to prevent leaves from going into the storm drains (can't rake them to the curb except for a very short window), for fear of upsetting the ecosystem, but nobody seems worried about the literally tons of salt being flushed into the storm drains and into the rivers when it snows.

Setec.. you also forgot the oil and grease runoff from all of the improperly maintained vehicles on the roads.

Frank, that definition seems to be one that the IRS uses to stop people from cheating on their taxes by claiming that money they spent on a hobby is in fact "a business" which is incurring losses which offsets their income and reduces their tax liability. Since our young friend isn't filing tax returns (from what I can gather), this has no bearing on what "the town" is trying to enforce. Or am I missing something?

Have your Dad take you to the courthouse ( normally where you would do county business) or the state buiding in your area. After they go "huh?" they will figure something out that will make you complient. Your next area is ..Do you live in a PUD? Planned subdivisions normally have Homeowners Assc that regulate everything..what you fence looks like, what kind of trashcan is allowed etc etc. That I see is your biggest hurdle.

One thing to remember also, reguardless of if you do one a week or seven.....Who is responsible for that car in your possession. Since you are a minor no matter what happens to that vehicle while you have it would be your parents responsibilty.

Supposedly the state is to find these things out now from businesses. I believe I was told this has to do with Homeland Security. Did you know that a terrorism tax (for lack of a better word) is added to general liability polices? Being a minor with a money making hobby, I am not sure if homeowners insurance would cover this area.

No lol I dont live in a PUD. My parents are very popular around my neighborhood, as am I because most adults think its great that im working at 15. And thanks 3Dog, will do.

When I started detailing out of my garage I went around to the neighbors in close proximity of my house and talked to them. Told them what I was doing and told them that if there was EVER a problem to please let me know. All of them were more than happy to have someone in the neighborhood that they could bring their cars too. I keep in contact with them, always wave and smile and make sure that they know they can come ask me for help with anything whever they want.

I only do one car a weekend so there isn't a big flow of cars coming and going. Plus I am always in my garage so it doesn't look like a strange car is in the driveway every weekend. The other thing that helps is that, two houses down, there are some pinheads that always seem to be working on some POS trying to get it running. They ahve cars coming and going from the house at all hours (dealing drugs) and the cops have been out a few times to "talk" to them. They have come over a couple times to ask if I had any tools they could borrow and I politely take them by the arm and "walk" them back across the street. I remind them that there is never a reason for them to cross the street and to stay away from me and any of the other neighbors. Don't want them getting too comfy with approaching anyone in the neighborhood.

I too have wondered about the taxes thing. I doubt that I am going enough to warrant any attention but ya never know. I talked to my tax guy and he said not to worry about it cuz I wasn't making enough to tax. Plus I think that if anyone were to approach me in a "legal" manner I would probably just tell them that I wasn't charging anything and I just did this for friends and relatives.
