So I've got a Porter Cable 7428 to play with for the winter

Scott, we better watch out now. You'll perfect it in no time.

Tip: to eliminate hopping, dip the pad in water and spin it on the rotary on 6.

You'll be good to go.

Congrats!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have done this and its worked very nice. Scott is a hell of a lot more experienced than me but I did not care for the Megs pads with the rotary, I much prefer the LC CCS pads. They run smoother for me.

Scott which backing plate I sent you are you using?

Of course you can. Who is there to stop you from using it? :D

HAHA... That was funny:2thumbs:

I always wash out my pads frequent just to make sure they run smoothly with little to no contamination. On an average car, I will wash my pads out 10-20 times. More if it is hot and humid.

The 5" BP, used the larger one last night to practice and it is right at the edge of my 6.5" pads, no margin of error. :nervous2:

I am sure that the rotary will soon become second nature to you Scott. My question to you is when using the rotary did you tire more quickly versus a PC or Cyclo? For me the concentration of keeping a rotary in control is more tiring. Since correcting takes less time it could possibly mitigate the strength and concentration needed versus the PC.

10 to 20 times per car?!

the Megs yellow is a pretty decent rotary pad. I like the CMA constant pressure CCS pads-white, green and yellow with a rotary.

I wouldn't say it made me more tired but I did have to concentrate a lot more when using it. Plus it is heavier than the UDM. I did feel it a bit in my shoulders after I finished the truck.

I'm sure your learning curve has an unfair advantage and will spike straight up to pro status in no time. Watch out, it's very addictive.

Last month, I decided to give my Makita another try - I had kinda shelved it after a little accident with a piece of trim. But, I got some great coaching from a buddy that runs a bodyshop, switched to 3M products and pads and now I ALWAYS tape up trim, never touch plastic bumpers and I'm enjoying detailing again. It does take more concentration - but that just seems to make the time go by faster, like I'm in my own little world - I'm one with the rotary.

If you follow with a udm/pc etc... it will clean up the holograms induced by he rotary.

Used the rotary today, black Ford F-250. Baptism by fire, amirite?

Overall, it was pretty easy to use, had on 3 to correct and finished out on 2. I had a stray hologram here and there, just went over them with the rotary on 2 and that took care of it. I was using Optimum Polish and a yellow Meguiars polishing pad, figured that would keep me pretty safe. The only problem areas were the front fenders because of the flairs, took a couple tries to get them hologram free. I ended up using the UDM on the roof though, Ford truck roofs have 1" wide raised sections about 5" apart length-wise down the roof. With how grabby the rotary was at first on the fenders, I knew it would be worse on that roof.

Didn't do full correction on the truck, he wasn't interested in paying for it, but the rotary dramatically improved the finish, more so than the UDM or Cyclo would have...and in less time too. :)

I will try to get pics up this evening, no sun shots though; it was near sunset when I finished.
