SL550 Opti-Coat PRO and Clear Bra

Jean-Claude

Keeper of the beautiful
Wrapping the hood was probably the biggest paint in the butt, in regards to clear bra, I have worked with.

This job was done in a storage bay. The owner was giving it to his wife as a surprise Christmas gift and didn't want her to know.

eww..

Do you prefer to opti coat over or under clear bra? Or both

If someone is wanting it done at the flat starting rate, I say over the clear bra. This way you get the added protection for the clear bra. Optimum advises not to apply over self-healing films as the oc will affect the self-healing ability.

Either way, if the clear bra is removed you can always add the oc after teh fact.

Eric "trushine" Witt applied Opti-guard to xpel ultimate film on a GTR at the xpel training center in San Antonio, TX. No issues and I can also confirm that the self healing still works on the xpel ultimate film with OG applied.

I plan on getting the 3M on my new ram next month and want oc under incase i remove it, then over as well since its non healing clear bra i should be OK applying over.

Interesting.

At any rate, that was what Ron at Optimum told me when I specifically asked for their take on it.

Speaking intuitively, you would think that a solid coating on top of the self-healing film would impact it's ability to repair itself. I have a roll of Suntek's self-healing film arriving tomorrow. I will try it out on their film and report back.

What I tell my clients is that if they believe there is a chance they will sell the car before removing the clear bra, do not pay me to apply on the paint and then also on top of the CB. Otherwise, they are just paying for a redundancy that the next owner will reap at their expense. Simply put, if something can penetrate the clear bra, it will not blink at OC. But if OC can help protect the CB, even better.

May I ask why you decided to go with 3m's film? I presume you are talking about 3m Scotchguard and not Venture(owned by 3m since January 2011).

I can say that while I was at the Xpel training facility, I had Chris Thomas over night me some OG and I applied it to the training bumpers and a fully wrapped GTR while I was there. I taped off a line on the wrapped training bumper and coated one side with OG and left the other side plain Xpel ultimate. Then I took a wire brush to the whole area, across the taped line and then waved the heat gun over the scratches and both healed fine and you could still tell that there was OG on the film even after an IPA wipe down. The water would quickly sheet off the OG side and stick to and run off slowly on the non treated side. Hope this helps?
