Single Staged Paint

My uncle has a 1987 Mercury Cougar XR-7 that was stored for at least 7-10yrs. It has the single stage paint with no clear. I am wondering what is everyones step to use? Can I still use my Menzerna Line up? Any recommendations on how I should do this?

The car was garage kept so it isn't THAT bad, But it could use the shine.

Is single stage paint harder to bring to a good sheen? If so, I have Menzerna Power Gloss if needed.

Any and all recommendations will be greatly appreciated.

I prolly will have to stock up on pads since these will all turn blue from the paint.

will be done with a PC.

I was thinking I could do this.

Wash/Dry

Clay

Menzerna FPII<-- I have IP and Power Gloss if needed

Prime

Acrylic Jett

Natty's wax

stiffdogg06- What color is the Cougar? My '87 Lincoln was b/c and I'm just a little surprised to hear this one is ss.

The Menzerna should work fine but I like to use a Meguiar's product before the LSP as the trade secret oils seem to really enhance ss paint. And FWIW I like waxes as opposed to sealants on ss. So I'd probably get it really nice with the Menzerna (the paint will probably be a little soft unless it's white) and then I'd use either Meg's #9 (if it's still a bit imperfect) or one of their pure polishes (#3/#5/#7/#81/Deep Crystal step #2) and then your NB.

Oh, and Welcome to Autopia!

I'm with Accumulator on this one also but before I used IP would go with KAIO or something which chemical cleaners to remove the oxidation get smooth surface. We ended on a single truck using KAIO by hand because it was so much oxidation is was tearing up pads and the finish come out great after using IP and FP via the PC.

It's single staged because he had it repainted and never included a clear coat on it. Not factory paint.

It looks good but it sat forever and he got it running and wants the car to look nice.

thx for all the replies guys!!!:dance :dance

Aha, mystery solved.

If it's really oxidized then yeah, take DennisH's advice and use something to chemically clean off the oxidized paint first.

Try to be a little gentle as some ss repaints don't like having the top surface of the paint abraded too aggressively. This is most common with enamels, and I bet that's what's on it. I.e., do more gentle passes as opposed to fewer aggressive ones.

Ok thanks for the input Accum.! I see you're from Ohio.

Did you like how we were at 80 degress Monday and now in the 30-20's? :wall

So whats a good chemical cleanser for fairly cheap?

Would passes with Final Polish II with the white pad be an ok to start with?:buffing:

I know that the 87' Stangs were also B/C. That is surprising.

Are you sure about this? Fox Body Mustangs faded/turned chaulky and therefore were not clearcoated. The 93's might have been CC'd, but I can't remember?

Yeah, our weather sure is crazy this week!

A cheap, effective, OTC cleaner is Meguiar's Deep Crystal step #1 cleaner.

I bet the FPII/white will be too mild, but it'd sure be a safe starting point and it might do the trick (never know).

David Fermani- Remember that neglected clearcoats, especially the early-paint-tech ones, can white/chalky as they oxidize ;) Out in states like AZ you see it all the time.

We talked about this once before (Oxidation), chemically removing it with a cleaner before starting the polishing process.

Would the Meguiar's Deep Crystal be as effective as, or better than Klasse AIO ? Which is easier to apply?

Yup - I remember. But I also remember rubbing out countless Mustangs (Tempos, Escorts, Probes, etc...) and having the color of the car transfered onto the buffing pad. This was a sure indicator that there was no clear. Thank god for clear coat!!!
