Single Stage Paint Correction? (Supra)

Hey guys, I have a friend that is wanting me to help him with his car tonight. He has a 94 Toyota Supra in white, that he is wanting to smooth the finish on. I looked at the car last night, and I don't believe the clay bar (which he requested) is going to come close to fixing the problem. He told me the car is a single stage paint from the factory (non-clearcoat). I'm probably going to just do what he requested (clay bar and wax), but was curious for my own knowledge, how you would go about correcting it.

I have a Edge2k 6" wool pad (yellow) that I've used on my car and another friend's Z06, with the Menzerna PO106FF, with amazing results. Would this be a death sentence on the white Supra? I have a green and orange edge 2k 6" foam pad as well, and I believe Menzerna SIP. I wouldn't mind testing a panel on his car, but since the car is white, I couldn't tell if I was lifting paint, like I could with a red or blue car. Any help and advice is appreciated, thanks!

go and pick up some Meguiars Cleaner/Wax in the red bottle and use your green pad( I think it will have enough bite) it should clean that white up really well, expect to have some white on that pad if it is a single stage paint...

having detailed many Supra's now (I own one myself), Supra paints that are single stage are only the black ones, so the white has clear coat unless it was repainted somewhere along the way.

FYI, single stage will transfer paint to the pad so that's the best way to know for sure if it is or not, so try a small spot and if the pad turns white, it's single stage, if not, it's clear coated.

Unless it is really bad, I wouldn't use the wool on it. The most aggressive I've gotten with any Supra is LC yellow pad, but orange preferably.

Thats good to know. Ive been a member at SF for years and hadnt heard that. You learn something new every day!

The owner was pretty sure it was a single stage, but when I saw it in person I discovered that it was repainted, and there were areas that had clear runs in it. I didn't go there to do paint correction, and I did a test panel in the passenger rear 1/4 that wasn't impressive.

After the wash and clay bar however, I did the driver 1/4 panel, and with the sun reflecting, you could tell a huge difference. The white was able to hide the swirls in the garage, but not once I got it outside.

I will be rescheduling with the owner to finishe polishing the car some time next week. Thanks for your help guys, the knowledge was valuable to me, especially so I wouldn't have to buy myself a paintjob today. :getdown
