well being scottish and having been flat out drunk many times on the whiskey they all taste the same after a few .
Best thing to do is try and buy a few mickys of diffrent types to see what u like most expat bars have them buy the shot .
jura,ardbeg ,glenfidich, really nice 1 has a peat taste to it is called talisker never seen it in the stores here in canada .But never tryed really looking for it good luck .

Some of the best Scotch I have had is McCallan's 18 year old.
Johnnie Walker Blue blended scotch whiskey is something to behold.
However, both are extremely expensive especially by the glass at a bar that serves it. The Johnnie Walker is $200+ a bottle. I've never bought the McCallans by the bottle.
Never drink with ice!

My favorite is Linkwood (15 y/o),,,,,,,,,
Another vote for Macallan although I think I usually keep the 12yr around. I also usually have some Glenfiddich orGlenlivet around. I have always considered Glenfiddich a good intro price-wise and for its mild flavor.
Go to a bar known for Scotch. There is always some local place where they have a broad selection. Try scotches from different areas: http://www.scotchwhisky.net/distilleries/index.htm A good scotch drinker can usually pick the region the scotch came from based on taste/smell. Such as some have a strong peaty flavor from (I can vouch for this) and others have a taste of the coast in them (not really sure about this). Just enjoy.

Glen = valley, Fiddich = deer, so that brand translates into 'valley of the deer', I guess where the distillery has been since the beginning of time.
Thinking back, I don't remember ever sampling a bad one but the variations are endless, all the way from a very powerful 150 overproof one, MacFarclas that made me sit down, to perhaps the most gentle one ever, Cardhu, light in colour, like the morning sun on a wheat field and a very delicate flavour.
A couple of years ago there was a controversy about Cardhu, and that it was going to end it's reign as a single malt and become a blend.
Any one of the suggested brands would be worthy to buy and make sure you're sitting down and strapped in when you / if you ever try MacFarclas. Heck, even a spotter nearby would be a good idea, just in case you fall off your chair.

Laphroaig has been a favorite here for a long time.

I recommend comparing it to a "mild" blend such as Dewers White Lable, and you'll see the difference. Laphroaig is my favorite spirit in the world; damn I miss her! :hairpull

My partner bought me a bottle of 25 y/o Glenfarclas (the bottle came in a wooden box) after I won a big trial. I opened it after my father's funeral and shared some with my uncle. Nectar of the gods.....my dad always believed in going first class, so I'm sure he appreciated our indulging.
But Linkwood is still my under $100 favorite.

try glenmorangie they do really good oak cask malts i dont know if you can get it where you are but here in scotland we can get plenty :grinno: there are loads worth a try it is all down to personal taste.you can order whisky from the royal mile whiskey company in edinburgh they will send overseas but i dont know how much you will be charged for this.i get all my dads whiskey from them they are really helpful and are able to give you brief description of what they taste like.i'm lucky i suppose my favorite whisky is glenkinchie the destillery is just down the road so if run out its 20min drive to get some more. :woohoo:

Laphroaig gets my vote too, first time I tasted it my reaction was "wow".
