silly comments that drive you up the wall....

I have a neighbor that always tells me I'm going to wash the paint off my car. It was cute the first time, but the last 9 have just been irritating.
I always get "When are you going to do mine?"
And I say "When you can afford it."
Thank god they are neighbors and we are all pretty cool, but I had a guy who was in a white WRX pull up one time and ask me what all I do and how much I'd want to polish his car. I told him and he was like, "Oh fu** that I'll just take it to Danny's." Which is a popular swirl-o-matic franchise here in AZ.

"When are you going to do mine?" If someone is walking by I can almost gauge exactly when they're going to say this, I've heard it that often. It's like a space shuttle countdown and my timing is impeccable.
"How much?! I get it detailed for $15 at the drive thru car wash." Of course I've got to be polite, trying to sell these people is nearly futile.
Then there are the classics you get with every job, "Working hard or hardly working?". That's so clever, how the phrases got switched around and have completely opposite meanings.

I have passion in what I do, and my type of customers understand what they are paying for. Therefore, I don't even look and don't respond to any comments from passers-by. It's a waste of time to entertain their silly questions and the act of answering them is actually an insult to our profession.
When customers walk pass my shop, they are often intrigued by many cars that are covered up. This is a mystery to them, and they are not used to seeing it like this. It connotes seriousness and professionalism. Many of them look like some Asian tourists walking pasta Bulgari boutique and peeking sneakily inside without daring to walk in. My boys and I continue working and the din from the machines just allows us to work as though we could not feel anything else.
For those who walk in, I can tell immediately whether they are my 'type" of customers or not. If they are, consultation starts and might lead to an appointment. If they start to ask silly questions, I will just indirectly and politely refer them to an el cheapo polish and wax place further down my street.
When we do serious jobs, we have to be serious and firm.
Don't waste time entertaining non-customers or those people who're just asking for fun.

Years ago, before i was born my father started a car dealership. I joined the ranks when he waslayed up in the hopspital while i was in high school. The dealership slowly dwindled to a wholesale only outfit. Now i wholesale cars....ya know, to other dealers. my favorites-
"Whens the next auction i have to find a car?" my response- "well the auction is thursday so youve got 3 days to find someone to take you"
When people first meet me i tell them that i wholesale used cars and their first question is- "so what do you have for a cheap ___ "
I used to work at Lowe's. 98% of the people there are dimwits. I still stop in occasionally. They all know i left Lowe's to start my own detailing business and i've had alot of luck but since detailing involvees cars they all ask "so you still working for your dad?"
One of my favorites is from the people that thought I couldnt do it. Said with kinda a sneer- "so are you stil self employed?" as if im on unemployment.
I do alot of work for 5 different car dealerships on a regular basis. As many of you know, car dealers are a different breed...i should know, im one of them. nd as always they ask the stupedist questions-
"do you have any of that spray dye for the carpets?"
"can you just grab some touch up paint and take care of that for me?"
or when i pick up a car they will ask me to do somthing that i would normally do anyway, such as - "the wondows are really nasty in that one can you make sure you get those? thanks!"
But the best one with the cheap guys, to which i can always respond is- "well this one doesnt have to be perfect just a quicky is fine" to which i always say- "well we only do 'em one way."
and i almost forgot- every time i stop into Lowe's i get heckeled by one puerto rican cashier who barely speaks english. he claims he details cars on the side.-
"Hey skinny! You don't detail man, you just wash"
Last time i heard this, i'd had enough- "Hey rico, you don't even have a green card!"

The comment twords Rico was made becuase he insults me in a joking manner everytime i see him, so i insult him back....its just somthing we do.
He calls me white boy all the time....or skinny white boy, however I am not offended by that at all, so the green card comment, allthough false, was a joke, and we both saw it as that.
