Signature Detailed- BMW 528

Greg Gellas

I'm Greg :)
Hey guys, I had a customer contact me about a E39 BMW 528. I did this car over a couple of days. I took some inital pictures before washing. You might notice the name on the back of the car... on a BMW....A full Race BMW...:) Its Geoff from Full Race girlfriend's car that has some BIG plans apparently ;)

I went right to town, foamed and washed with a mixture of Dawn and CG citrus wash and clear.

Seeing as it was bitter cold out, I decided to dry the car inside the garage. Even just drying the towel was pulling like going over sandpaper :o Nice warm garage ensured no icing and I was able to clay the car to truly inspect the condition of the paint. As you can see from the pictures it was in pretty rough shape, probably years of tunnel car washes....The appearance was grey rather than black :(

It was pretty hammered....After doing a test section with a purple wool pad and some 105 we still weren't seeing the correction we wanted. Although we got some excellent correction it just wasn't enough cut to get the much deeper stuff out, as you can see from the hood that was done with SIP and a wool pad. I wanted to ensure an amazing finish so we moved on to a black wool pad with some ardex 1000. You can see the 50/50's on the trunk after the Ardex 1000, it shows how much correction we acutally got :)

The deeper rougher areas were taken care of with the ardex 1000, while the rest of the car was compunded with a purple wool pad and 105. The 105 was followed with 203 on a orange pad and finished down with 106 on a white pad. Finally the entire car was gone over with Ez-creme glaze on a black pad. This is a great prep for a sealant. The cleaners in this stuff allows the sealant to bond to the surface wonderfully. After the Ez Creme, I followed up with Blackfire Wet Diamond Sealant. I applied with a red pad and let it sit for quite a while. I absoutly love the slickness this stuff adds to the surface. OVerall we got anywhere from 85-90% correction. Some of the reflections and depth that were achieved I thought were pretty sick :D

Here are the afters enjoy and thanks for looking

Greg - thanks for such an incredible job, I absolutely LOVE the work you did :love: - Anyone considering bringing your vehicle to Signature Detailing, DO NOT HESITATE!! Greg truly goes above and beyond to deliver a first rate color correction. As Greg mentioned, this is an odd car for the Full-Race stable, but the final project is going to be pretty wild, and certainly a magazine feature car. Had i not brought the vehicle to greg, theres no way this vehicle would have been photographed.

Some background on the project: Ive been looking for a good vehicle to put a 2JZGTE into. These motors are easily found between $1200-$1400 and thats just unbeleiveable to think an 800+whp capable motor is that affordable, so i needed to find something to drop it in. I wanted a 4 door for my cross country trips (i drive from NJ to AZ all the time) and im not into IS300s or GS300s. The choice was either a BMW M3, M5 or an old school AMG mercedes. I really was into the E39 M5s but didnt like their front suspension and steering design (compromised for the V8 engine), so i went with the same generation vehicle but the I6 version. This particular generation BMW was chosen because the E39 5-series is very stiff and reasonably lightweight with great suspension geometry and 4.10 final drive. This particular I6 car uses full aluminum subframes and suspension components, resulting it an ~3400lb curb weight. Once i decided that this was the car that i wanted to put the 2JZ in, i started searching for the prime candidate. I searched all over and ended up finding a 98 with 52k miles, but heavy swirling in the paint... for only $6500. I knew the chassis was in great shape, despite the body being abused for the last 11 years... and thats where Greg saves the day

interestingly enough the 528's 2.8L inline 6 engine happens to be almost identical dimensions to the 2JZGTE from a MKIV supra twinturbo... here are a couple

photos of the one that eshfit did, even using the stock radiator and mainting A/C, power steering, etc:

my setup will be using is a VVti 2JZ with a single borgwarner airwerks twinscroll turbo on a full-race kit. I sold off the last of my volk rims to pay for an OS Giken superlock LSD.

Its going to go under the knife once the R14 is wrapped up 100%, and it just made it into Gran Turismo 5 so i have to do some small things before i can call that project finished.

:beerchug: Thanks Greg, when youre ready to go fast give me a call and we can get that supercharger out of your garage

***!? Geoff? Dude when i had my Honda's Geoff was the man! They make some very very very sick manifolds etc . . . . what a treat it must have been to work on a vehicle of his.

It simply amazes me to see the things that people like Geoff come up with. a 2JZ in a BMW? That is just amazing. Should be a rather fun car to drive.

Anyways, excellent job on the car. It turned out great. I guess i better invest in a black wool pad in case i ever run into something like that where the purpl foamed wool won't cut it.

Keep up the good work.

Wow that's one wicked BMW! looks very sleek and squeaky clean. Nice job.. Whew! That's really awesome. And the bmw parts are just amazing.
