Should i get a Flex 3401?

Ha ha...the dear departed Bill D used to refer to that as "the holy trinity" (PC, Cyclo, rotary) and in the other current Flex thread Accumulator admits to having those 3 plus the Flex 3401.

Ah..Bill D. Hope he's doing well.

Yeah, I have rotaries (Makita and Metabo), Cyclos, and PCs (all of which I've used for years) and I still bought the Flex 3401. I like it so much better than my rotaries it's hard to verbalize. Best detailing-related expenditure I've made in ages (and that's saying something).

Wow thanks for all the respones!!! I think i might just get the Flex just to see hands on how it works compare to a rotary. I think ill detail my GF black camry (Never been detail). I like to try and do half the hood with the rotart and half with the flex. I love the idea of not taping up the whole car and i am worry about the edges. Has anyone done a write up of a rotary vs Flex???? I would love to see some 50/50 shots on a black car!!

thanks guys!

You should be able to get the same final result virtually every time with a rotary or the FLEX. It just might differ on what combination or how many steps it took to get there (or not).

I experienced this on the bumpers of an '07 Porsche 911. The PC with small pads wasn't cutting the defects. The rotary was barely cutting the defects, but kept leaving holigrams that the PC wouldn't remove. The winner, after calling gmblack3a for advice ended up being the Flex with a white pad and SIP. Cut the defects, and left an LSP ready finish.

I now find myself spot compounding, and polishing out wetsanding marks with the rotary, but using the Flex on the majority of defects. I even polished out a hard, C5 Vette last month with the Flex, LC Orange, and M105. Didn't take me any longer than it would have with the rotary, and I didn't have to tape up the car.

Very good point... a lot of people like to avoid using a rotary on plastic bumpers due to heat issues- with the FLEX that isn't an issue and you can still use (usually) the same pad and products that were working with the rotary so it's quick and easy and doesn't require extra testing with a DA to do the bumpers. :idea
