Short Video: Polishing Nissan GTR

A few questions,

It seems that polish takes a LONG time to break down, why not create the polish to work a faster so details take less time? I would guess it takes twice as long vs. menzerna.

With these new pads having them not centered doesnt seem to matter? I noticed the finishing pad looked off, but the results looked fine?

And a comment............how can you stand the noise of the flex, if they can fix that I'll switch!

Cheers,

GREG

Yo Greg,

By "that polish" are you speaking of the new Optimum Finishing polish or the Ultrafina which I also used on the GTR?

I only have Menzerna FPII and yes it does work faster than Ultrafina and it also seems to have more cut....if you want to call what these types of polishes do....but my intention was to compare the Optimum to Ultrafina as I had already used it along side with the FPII.

A faster working time is not always the best method and I believe this type of paint (Nissan GTR) benefits best from slow, steady passes that are allowed to create heat. I'm not speaking of a fast concentrated build up of heat but rather a "slow cook" (for lack of a better phrase at the moment) that does correction or leveling through repetitious passes and not so much through abrasive methods.

I usually explain my method or mindset of polishing by describing how hard of a material concrete is yet if something as soft as a water drop hits the same spot in a consistent manner the concrete will be eroded away. I look at polishing in the same manner, especially when working with this GTR paint. I sought to do numerous passes instead of seeking to level it all down in a few passes.

The backing plate I was using, if I am correct about the one I used, is a beta item and not at liberty at the moment to comment about it. The pads were centered though...at least in terms of "eyeball" straight.

I don't really notice any type of bothersome noise coming from the Flex. To me it is quieter than the DeWalt but nothing so far is as quiet as the Metabo.

Anthony Orosco- Hi, Anthony! I'm late to this party but did want to say it's always nice to have you posting here and I enjoyed the video. And I'm glad it's you pros working with that self-healing paint and not me ;)

The video was a good reminder about how little Optimum (of any kind AFAIK) it takes and how long you need to work it!

Heh heh, just what I need to hear about, newfangled pads that work especially well! Pretty impressive how there was zero sling, considering how you were manipulating that rotary (even up off the panel).

And yeah, please keep us apprised regarding that backing plate (it looked especially thick with foam or something, like it'd be good at distributing applied pressure).

What died on your Metabo? It seems like the spindle on mine isn't perfectly straight but I haven't done anything about it...

I thought the info about the (Lake Country pads called "Kompressor"), wasn't supposed to be out of the bag yet. I concur, they are great pads that work well.

I got the information about both "Freedom" and "Kompressor" pads in september?

Hey Accumulator, thanks so much for the warm welcome back :)

On my Metabo the cord went bad in 2 places. The first I was able to fix but the second time it went bad right at the connection on the interior guts. It's still fixable but I need to get a part to connect it which seems to be discontinued. I also believe I need some bushings.

Also thanks to you and everyone else for the positive feedback on the video.:D

I was given the green light to post up my review of these pads and as Porta noted they have been out in testing form for a while now.

I also know that some distributors should be getting the pads in shortly.

The info and pads have both been available/in use for a long time, just didn't know they were public knowledge yet. I like both of them myself. The Freedom setup is unique.

Is Freedom the set up for the backing plates??

Freedom is just like a more padded backingplate and less foam on the pads. Would love to test the freedom in 5". Shame that Kompressor isn't avaible in smaller sizes then 6,5"

EDIT:

Sorry for going off topic. And great write up btw :goodjob

i got a few of these pads today. I'll just be using them on my PC but I like the design of them. I just stumbled acorss this clip on youtube then noticed this thread...Anthony needs a haircut...LOL

Where did you get them from?

Some info about this self healing paint aka "scratch shield"

I am in the market for a new coupe and the Infiniti G37 is one of the choices i am looking at getting. The G37, along with i think most new model infinitis will come with this paint.

Found out from searching a G37 forum and from a knowledgable sales guy (most are clueless) that basically you DO NOT put a buffer on this self healing paint. Heat, meaning hot air or the sun is what will enable the self healing qualities to work. In cold weather you can put a hair dryer over the paint. Buffing the paint will destroy this property and will essentially revert the paint back to 'normal' (non self healing). Also the self healing is good for 3 years then i guess it becomes normal paint afterwards.

As for the GTR in particular, I'm a big fan of this car and like to think i know a bit about it but this is the first i've heard of it having self healing paint.

From the official Nissan GTR global site: It has -

"Advanced 6-Stage paint process with full double clear coat and chip-resistant paint in critical areas". "Super Silver special metallic paint, with 8-stage process, including three clearcoats and hand-polishing to achieve a lustrous, liquid effect".

It's bad enough that my neighbors (who are likely clueless about auto detailing) see me with my Makita polishing my paint :buffing:, Imagine if they see me with a hair dryer blowing my car :wow:

Anyways, looks like i'll soon be trying out these new pads and the Opt finishing polish.

Hey David.....yes that's correct I normally used a Metabo for a good number of years and loved the older styles but didn't have much love the newer version even though it had more torque.

My Metabo is sitting on the side lines waiting for a repair but it seems all the parts I need for the repair and "discontinued":down

Anthony

Great post and video Anthony!

I melted my gears in my Metabo. Did you know that the 5 year warranty is only good for defective parts and not wear and tear on parts. I do miss the Metabo though and will order the parts to fix it myself.

How long have you had your Flex rotary for? I was thing of getting one, but was unsure if it would handle the heavy duty work load of severe paint correction.

Nah, nature is taking care of my hair....as in losing it naturally!!!

I'd like to see these in 4 or 5.5 inch. the shape of these in a smaller size would seem versatile on the various surfaces and small areas.
