for some helpful advertising, name spreading, etc with a car shop, what do you guys offer to them as incentive....

reason i ask is i did a friends import car and there were a bunch of guys who wanted to have me do their cars for the next show...I want to leave cards and flyers in the shop so that when customers go in, they see it...

whats the best relationship to build...do his car for free and hope he gives me some business, do it for 1/2 off and hope returns business comes, offer him a free detail for every 5 full details he gets me, etc???? What have you all had success with....keeping in mind other people who both work at the shop, and friends of friends are waiting for the next show to have me detail their cars....

thanks

First off, I'm not in the business, but I do know business!

For personal friends only you can make a decision, but there still should be some give and take. A good friend is not going to let you detail his car without returning the gesture in some way and I don't mean buying you a beer for a detailing job. If you get stung once don't let that person do it the second time, if you do he will not "respect you" in the least!! Your time is your money.

For a shop owner just recommending you, (if you do great work) there is no reason for a monetary kick back whatsoever, after all, if you do a great job it reflects on him, helps his business! However, having delivered a large Combination Pizza delivered slightly before lunch time will keep you in his mind forever, if he has definitely deserved attention!! You'll just have to trust me on this.

If you try to go all out on $$$ kickbacks, they will come to absolutely expect it and lead to problems.

Best of all worlds, if you do "REALLY" great work, they will beat your door down and you can pay yourself.

Two rules, never cheat or screw over a customer. If you have an irate customer for whatever reason, try to please him within reason, if not possible, tell him he is banned from your shop politely explaining why! You'll do fine.

I have a relationship with a high-end auto repair shop. They work on my personal vehicle, and I just asked if I could leave some cards and flyers on their counter. They also recommend me whenever one of their customers asks about auto detailing.

Cross promote each other instead of worrying about freebies. I recommend one body shop and one tint shop to my customers because those shops do excellent work. In turn, they recommend me to their customers interested in detailing.
