Seeking information and opinions on a few products

First off, did Meguiar's stop making the Deep Crystal system? All I can find is the wax, and I hit every store in this town that carries detailing supplies. No luck.

Busted open my first clay bar today. I've used one before, but never owned one until last Christmas. I FINALLY convinced my dad to let me clay his truck, after he saw one used on my brother-in-law's goat. Opinions on Clay Magic?

In a desperate effort to avoid the repeated suggestion of dish soap *shudders* I searched the supply cabinet, and found a can of Turtle Wax Zip Wax wash. Anybody ever used it?

Welcome to Autopia lol. If you can't find it--see if you can look it up online (Meg's) I've never used that personally so I can't comment. A bunch of people seem to go for clay magic, I know Accumulator likes his Sonus green because it's lsp safe. General consensus though seems to be that claybar is claybar more or less....

Dish soap may not be all too terrible if you intend on getting sealant/wax down anyways...

Heh heh, I can't help but wonder "why would you want to find that stuff " :chuckle: Sorry, couldn't resist...but seriously, what did you need, the "Step One Cleaner" or the "Step Two Polish"? There are alternatives that you might like even better.

While I haven't used that one, the consensus is that ClayMagic is a very good choice. I do prefer the Sonus Green, but it's very, very gentle.

The TW Zip is a lot better for routine washes than dish soap, but is awfully lacking in the sort of lubrication and encapsulation that, IMO/IME, make for a truly good car wash. I'd spend a little money on something like Meguiar's Gold Class (if you can't spend a little more on something that's truly good).

And Welcome to Autopia from me too :D

Thanks for the opinions.

It's the cleaner that I can't find. I didn't find polish either, but I'm not out of that.

Give me an alternative, and I'll take it. Problem is, I hit Autozone, Advance, and Wal-Mart (that's all we have. No, I'm not kidding. I WISH I was kidding) and none of them have ANYTHING suitable for a replacement.

Accum will most likely say 1z paint polish

Is there a reason you wont order online?

I doubt it's actually any sort of replacement..but my guess would be last resort IPA might suffice? but I can't imagine that it'll really do any contaminant cleaning really--from what I understand (which isn't much btw) IPA helps you rid the car of oils and maybe a portion of contaminants

Alexshimshinhae- Actually, yeah...I would recommend buying something online, that's just the easiest way to have the best range of choices. Maybe not the 1Z PP though, doesn't sound like he's after a polish like that (not that it might not be a good idea though).

trillium121- OK, now I think I'm following you. Hmm...yeah, I gotta admit that DC#1 *is* a decent, if very gentle paint cleaner and it's nice to have it as an OTC option.

I'd find an autobody/paint supply place and see what Meguiar's products they have.

But FWIW, I really do bet that you could benefit from a mildly abrasive polish (the DC stuff is functionally nonabrasive) such as Meguiar's M80 Speed Glaze, and there are a scad of options if you order online. Lots of good paint cleaners/all-in-one products to choose from too.

But see what the body/paint supply store has, stores like that can radically redefine your idea of "OTC".

I don't have the resources at the moment to order anything online. My dad, however, does. I'll sit him down at the computer and see what we can find.

trillium131- Here are a few things worth checking out:

-Zaino All In One

-Autoglym Super Resin Polish

-Klasse All In One (beware of ad-copy hyperbole that makes it sound like a miracle worker ;) )

-1Z (EinsZett) Metallic Polish with Wax and Paint Polish

-Meguiarls M80 Speed Glaze

I'd rather use any of the above than the Deep Crystal steps 1 & 2.

Also look into Collinite brand waxes, which are so superior to the DC Step #3 Wax that you just can't imagine.

I'm actually starting to look at Zaino--still seeing a bunch of references to their products--I'm kind of in between zaio and SRP ...but i figure by the time i get to being ready for a new product--i'm sure something new would come out....

In most cases I'd steer people towards the SRP instead of the ZAIO; I know that *I* use SRP a lot more often and I got by without the ZAIO just fine, not that I mind having it on the shelf.

IMO Zaino ZAIO topped with Z8 is an awesome durable combo. The advantage of the Super Resin Polish is that you can pick it up at PepBoys if you have one local.

IMO the advantage of the SRP is that it can conceal marring, whereas the advantage of ZAIO is that it can do a little correction. Not like either one is a miracle worker, but when the marring isn't all that bad they offer two different ways to deal with it.

I guess my thing is I'm working on building a more complete detailing routine...as well as coming up with a system that also allows me to detail without having to compound all the time but still have clean paint (ny driving has a way of constantly spritzing your car down with all sorts of crap)

Then use one of the AIOs and top with wax. You'll just have to try the various AIOs and see which one(s) work best for you, in *your* situation. What's right for me might not be right for you, but between KAIO, ZAIO, SRP, and maybe one of the others that gets recommended frequently, you'll have all the bases covered.

And no, that's not being a "product collector" any more than when a mechanic has three or four screwdrivers or wrenches in the same size.
