Seeking Advice...

Hey if you are doing this all by hand then you might want to forget about the swirl removal. Even swirl removal with a pc can be a pain, i can't even imagine what it would be like by hand. Don't the new infinitis have the scratch resistant clear coat anyways?? Maybe you should try a glaze or something with fillers to hide the swirls until you can invest in a machine.

If it does have a scratch proof clear coat, then my car didnt come with it.lol. Plus I dont think it helps that my car is black.

plus this will be me with a machine :buffing: lol

lol... its not that bad. i was nervous the first time i used my pc a couple weeks ago, so i tested it out on the hood of my pos pathfinder first. i was comfortable with it right off the bat and did my m3 that weekend and had no issues at all.

my last two cars have been black, so i feel your pain :hairpull

I also drive a black G35, though mine is a 2006 sedan but I wouldn't expect the paint to be all that different.

The clear coat is EXTREMELY soft, which means, that it is going to be very difficult to keep this thing swirl free. You are going to have to invest in some top notch wash products such as mitts and grit guards.

Working by hand, you're best option is to hide the swirls. I don't know much about the Megs 3-step system but I assume it is similar to Mother's. In the Mother's system there is a sealer/glaze (which actually has NO sealing properties, its strictly a glaze!), that will fill in scratches. Just make sure the Megs system has something similar.

Also, I would stay away from whatever wax they suggest as step 3 and use Megs NXT instead. It is VERY easy to use, fills defects well, and looks pretty darn good.

Well nothing is scratch proof really. The scratch resistant clear is harder to scratch, which in turn makes it harder to correct. It's pretty difficult to remove swirls by hand on "conventional" clear, i figured it would be even harder with the scratch resistant clear (i though the newest infinitis had it).

Anyways i polished out my dads '05 g35 coupe last weekend, and yeah the clear was pretty soft and easy to correct (with a pc, orange pad and menz ip that is). If you are going to get into car care and stuff, then you might want to look into a pc. In my opinion it's a great investment even if you use it once or twice a year. The results you can achieve with it are amazing. And yes they are pretty easy to use. Like most things in life, if you be careful and take time learning the ropes, you'll find out it's not as difficult as it seems.

Good luck with the G!

PROServices- You bet! I still like the old PI-III RC 05933 and PI-III MG 05937, by rotary, PC/Cyclo, or hand. Good stuff but getting hard to find. Just did the MPV with it a few weeks ago.

G35Coupe- The Meg's Deep Crysal system will not do much of anything for your marring; the step #2 polish is nonabrasive. Scratch-X won't do much better IMO.

If I were doing it by hand I'd absolutely get some 1Z Paint Polish or their Metallic Polish with Wax (sources: Welcome to Exceldetail.com! or Aloha & Welcome to Our Oasis for All Your Auto Detailing Supplies & Accessories ). Even if you have to wait for it to arrive, or wait to raise the money for it, that's what I'd do.. simply no question about it.

G35Coupe, where are you located? I've got machines and lots of products you can use. I have a g-coupe as well and it needs a day of work on it for summer. You can certainly borrow stuff if you're near.

Yeah... G35, if you are close, I would be willing to help you out also. Just tell us where you are and maybe one of us can help you out with a machine. Far easier than doing it by hand!!

I just got a g35 07 black coupe as well :) im in SA, TX. just ordered a PC 7424 for $106 from tool-times.com or osmething. found hte site from porter cable's site. very cheap! i got menzerna polish and klasse sealant.

+1 REALLY good advice, IMHO.

Echoing the advice of others....

Don't even bother to try swirl removal by hand. There aren't enough days in the month for you to do a whole car. Find a good glaze to hide the swirls, and start saving your money for a PC 7424.

Let's not forget us 7336 guys. You could save for one of those, too.:bolt

ok, then what glaze do you guys recommend? does meguiars make a glaze? and when would i put the glaze, after the clay bar right?

Remember, I am doing this all by hand.

I'd *still* say to use the 1Z to both correct (a little) and hide (a lot), but if you want to use OTC stuff then yeah the glaze goes on right before the LSP/wax.

I'd at *least* use some Meg's #80, or even #9 first though and yeah they're easy enough to use by hand. Then apply the glaze after either of those. The extra step will do a lot IMO.

Meguiar's products that function as glazes: #3/#5/#7/#81/Deep Crystal Step #2 Polish.

Lock in the glaze with something durable, like Collinite, not something short-lived like NXT or Deep Crystal.

ok... here's my final decision in order and with the products...

1. Wash- Meg's Deep Crystal Car Wash

2. Clay Bar- Meg's Smooth Surface Clay Kit

3 Scratch Remover- Meg's Scratch X

4. Paint Cleaner- Meg's Deep Crystal System Paint Cleaner (#1)

5. Polish- Meg's Deep Crystal System Polish (#2)

6. Wax- Still debating whether to use Meg's NXT or Gold Class. (any other recommendations?)

Anyone have any final tips or suggestions before I do this? (by hand, and it's my 1st time )

G35Coupe- I'd probably go with #26 instead of NXT or Gold Class, but that's just me.

I'd get their Gold Class shampoo instead of the Deep Crystal stuff. Better lubricity = less marring ;)

Let us know how it turns out!
