Seeking advice on how to clean small front end chips of polish

attachment.php

Took this photo of my engine (rear) lid with my iPhone. Although the gloss seems pretty good/reflective I now see that the paint is not flat/smooth! I had not noticed this before probably because of all the oxidation and swirl that is now gone. Everyone (non car people) who have seen it this week have commented about how amazing/shiny/colorful it looks and asked how I did it. I`m new to this so any advice or comments welcome. Is this simply a reflection (no pun intended) of a poor repaint (from what I`ve pieced together the repaint was done in 2003) or can this be polished out (and how)?

Upon further scrutiny I can`t tell if this is in the clearcoat or the paint below it. I`ve used a spotlight aimed at various angles and I just can`t tell. Is there a way to determine where this is?

mhackney- That`s almost certainly what we call "orangepeel", a not-flat texture in either the clearcoat or, less often, the basecoat.

While some people wetsand/etc. to level the surface until it`s flat to eliminate that, I myself prefer thick (thus more protective) paint so I just live with it even when it`s really bad (or even *REALLY TERRIBLE* the the way it is on some of my vehicles).

Thanks. I`ve done some painting myself waaaayyy back and understand OP. This is much larger than OP so I didn`t really classify as that. But you are probably correct. I did do some research on OP last night and found a very interesting thread here on using a PC DA with CarPro denim pads and M101 to correct OP. His results were spectacular but I am sure his effort was too. I am going to live with it for another couple of weeks and see how it goes. These 911s have so many curves - including convex curves with tight radiuses on the front fenders - that I`d be a little concerned about the edge of the pad doing damage. They do make a smaller 3" pad though so it might be worth a try.

By way of information gathering, to correct OP like this, do most folks remove emblems and other things that obstruct working on the entire surface?

mhackney- The OP on two panels of my Crown Vic is also different from that on my other vehicles, that same kind of "but it`s BIG", makes for a kinda "semi-matte" effect even. And yeah, if I *were* gonna level something, I`d sure consider those Denim pads with M101 if not wetsanding.
