Sea Sponge - Grout Sponge

As anyone that talks to me about car care knows, I am a staunch opponent of sponges. With that being said - After reading (and reading) the talk on the grout sponges at a couple of sites, I decided to try one out yesterday. I figured if Charles used it, it had to be safe. I did heed his advice and used it on a test area. I was very hesitant and cautious with it, but I must say it didn't eat my paint off or anything by using the sponge. I don't know that I will replace my lambswool mitts with a sponge, but I think that it did okay.

On another note, I am looking to replace a Gilmour foam gun that was accidentally ran over by some yahoo the other day. I tried the $9 Orbit sprayer from Lowe's that I have read about, and while it's no Gilmour, for $9 it wasn't all that bad. Anyone have any suggestions before I up and spend $60 on a new Gilmour?

Home depot here in Toronto sells them very cheap but I stay away from them because of that picture you had in your original post showing all the dust like ground sea shell that was trapped in the sponge.
If you are concerned with residue in the sea sponge, try the grout sponge from Home Depot.
It won't have the residue and they work good, too. I just happen to prefer the shape and feel of the sea sponge.

Those of you considering trying the grout sponge: Try it on a small area first and make sure you are satisfied that it doesn't mar your finish.
Also, any sponge should be thoroughly wet before using it. I soak mine in my rinse bucket before using it with the soap solution.

I would like to try/buy a sea sponge but I don't know where to get a really good/big sponge.:passout:

I bought my sea sponge right off the docks in Tarpon Springs, FL.

I believe Charles Gearhead or another member here posted this link to get sea sponges about a year ago:
Buy the Acme Sponge & Chamois Company SW#1-1011C 10-11in. Sea Sponge at Hardware World - The world's #1 home hardware site
That particular link wasn't from me.
This is where I purchased mine.
Ace - Ace Tree: Home Goods: Cleaning: Cleaning Tools: Sponges: Acme® Sea Wool Sponge
The Ace Hardware sponge is a little smaller and a little more expensive on their web-site.
My local store ordered on for me and it was a dollar or two cheaper and I didn't have to pay any shipping.
The 10-11 in. sponge sounds good, but the 8" is big enough to do the job.

Thank you guys!:passout:
FWIW, Auto Geek carries a sea sponge, but more than one person has mentioned having some difficulty removing all the contaminants from it.
That was not a problem with the Acme sponge that I purchased.
It might be worth a call to AG to discuss what may or may not be a problem.
