Scuffed steering wheel.

For the past year or two, I've had a somewhat large scuff at the top of my steering wheel. I think it's the result of when I did landscaping and grinding the dirt from my hands into the one spot on the wheel.



Is there anything I can do to fix this myself? Maybe sand it down then some type of dye?
 
can you physically feel the scratches, or is it just a visible mark?



I know that my steering wheel shows dirt really easily (especially skin cells and such), and that the dirt sometimes looks like scuffmarks.



Could it just be something like that, or does it have depth to it?

I've tried cleaning it a few times and there's never any change to it, so I'm sure it damaged. If you run your hand over it feels kinda rough.
