scratch question

Someone scratched my truck in the parking lot today and i was wondering what the deepest scratch a professional detailer can take out. Most of the scratches are like white marks i tried meguiars scratch-X but it didnt take them out. One scratch is pretty deep through the paint. I was wondering if a professional detail shop could get light scratches out?

i had my parents take the infiniti to the dealer and they did a thing touch-up paint on it then according to my parents they used some fine grade sandpaper to even it out then that polished it. it looks great from 2+ ft away but close up you can see its been touched up if you look hard enough.

i have the same question bobby. i asked about scratchx after reading this: http://www.bettercarcare.com/articles.php?articleId=53.

i spoke with someone at autogeek who said scratchx was junk and i should buy poorboys ssr3. i ordered all of the poorboys polishes before reading about what it is. i waiting for it to get to me so i can see if it will remove my scratches. i hope it works by hand, because i don't have a machine yet.

A typical rule of thumb is if the scratch is deep enough to catch your fingernail on it you won't be able to polish it out. To do so would take off too much clear coat (paint). You can "soften" the edges of the scratch with polish so it isn't as noticable, but if the scratch is "pretty deep through the paint," then you will need to use touch-up paint:

Charlie Matco: ScratchX isn't too bad because it can be used by hand and the "diminishing abrasives" leave a pretty decent finish behind. It does often take several applications to address a defect, but it's fairly cheap and usually available locally (Wal-Mart, auto parts stores, etc.)

Poorboy's make very good products, but I don't understand what you mean by: "i ordered all of the poorboys polishes before reading about what it is." ?

I've used Scratch X for the first time this week to remove some minor spiderwebbing, water spots, marring, scuff marks, etc and it's done a nice job. One scratch on my bumper was deep enough to get my nail in but fortunately it isn't through the paint. The Scratch X did a nice job of smoothing it out and making it much less noticeable so now unless you know where to look you can't even see it.

It's a nice way to do some spot polishing by hand. :xyxthumbs

NuFinish scratch doctor works pretty well at smoothing a scratch but won't remove a deep one completely-and its a good idea to go over the spot with a mild SMR to make sure you don't have any micromarring
