saliva - does it hurt your car paint?

This is a silly question but if you lick your finger to wipe a mark on your car, will the saliva hurt your paint? I heard someone say that one time and I was just wondering if it was true.

Medical researchers have determined that saliva causes cancer, and heart disease ... but only when taken in very small doses over a long period of time.

Nah, it's slightly acidic IIRC but not a huge deal. I've heard of people using saliva to dissolve sap spots, apparently it does a pretty good job.

You got it! At work I'll get a couple sap spots through the day that will leave marks if left on too long in the sun. Spit works great!

Well, if you spit on another Autopian's car, there might be a bit more hurting than your car's paint :chuckle:

Most of the enzymes (I am saying "most" just because I am not 100% sure since it's been two years since I had biochemistry) in salivia just breakdown organic materials, which shouldn't affect something like paint. Really it's there to breakdown food and kill bacteria, not to eat through clear coat :)

I'll have to try some salivia on sap... I'm interested to see how well that works, as strange as that desire is, heh.

This is a pic of what a loogie can do to paint. This is the before shot.

I was able to polish most of it out with IP but there is some etching that I couldn't get out.

I guess you could say it IS harmful to paint if it is a loogie! :nixweiss

Saliva in a healthy person is has a pH of 7.4, and the enzymes in saliva react with starch to create sugar. They won't dissolve anything else that water wouldn't dissolve as well.
