Ha, wait till gas goes back up to $4...we've started seeing a lot of Smart cars here in NJ, I think they are smaller than that Abarth.

American's are so short sighted that with the lower gas prices I wouldn't be shocked if trucks start selling again.

Then in a couple months when gas goes back up maybe some people will sue the government into misleading them into buying SUV's under false gas pricing pretenses. I mean it is America....

Yeah, I half expected the Big 3 to announce they were going to reverse their decisions to close all those truck plants. Sorry to go off topic but as soon as gas went up GM put Hummer on the block...like anyone wanted to buy a division that has the worst gas mileage connotation any more than consumers wanted the product. I said when life gives you lemons, make lemonade...they should have put that big-truck hybrid system into EVERY Hummer and remade them into the high-mileage SUV brand, the GREEN SUV brand. But instead they are dead and buried.

That would have been interesting! Im sure they thought about it... they may do things wrong but you have to think that 1 of there like billion employees would say something like that.

The Big 3 CEO's and their "yes-men" boards continue to deny that they are ultimately responsible for their problems and insist there wasn't any mismanagement that put them in the hole. They continue to try to blame all their problems on "the global economic crisis..."

I'm not a fan of CEO's by any measure but businesses are failing all over the country. Business has fallen off hard for many businesses. Even successful businesses like Southwest have seen dramatic decreases in earnings.

some people have been saying they should do the exact same cars that are overseas... i still think that would help... that ford focus ST is pretty neat over there!

Still have to give props to Zaino...original post purpose.

I don't see a mass influx of small cars hitting the Americas anytime soon. Lets see how many people start tele-commuting or move into cities with decent public transportation after the recession/depression we are in. That would promote the ability to down-scale our vehicles a bit. When I lived in NYC, I used my car about twice per month, only to leave the city!

Oh, but what do you do when you have to go to Costco and buy 56 rolls of paper towels? Make 12 trips in a Smart?

Our thinking and work/lifestyle just inst there yet.

^additionally our cities are spread much further out than the layout of european ones.

cool article in car and driver a month or two ago. turns out only two cities in America was mass public transportation systems that are cost effective (the riders pay the majority of the cost) - NY and San Fran

Truth. SF and NY are the only two cities I have spent a long stay and have lived or would consider living in . Chicago is close, but too cold.

you know what the Europeans say about us, "All that land and they dont know what to do with it".

ding ding ding. :bow

I've tried having that argument with people before and they refuse to accept the fact that aside from about 2-3 cities TOPS in the entire country "smart" cars are not practical. We just don't have the same city planning they do- by a long shot.

HEHE, remember that european cities are old and cars have to fit narrow streets and Japan is a series of small islands. Cars are small because they need to be small, not because people want small cars.

Exactly!

But of course everyone just wants to say that Japanese automakers have a crystal ball and that they were "smarter." Oh well!

You guys are forgetting that fuel is MUCH more expensive in Europe than it is here (not sure about Japan).

That has always been the primary consideration, with narrow roads way behind in second.
