Sad, real sad...5 teens killed in high speed M5 crash

LoL, I was starting to think i'm alone in this one.

I know how *I* was at that age. I know that *I* had no business with a 500HP car. My son wont either and therefore he wont have one. I completely agree that the parents of the driver are *most* at fault for what happened here.

Let me take this opportunity to remind all of my friends here at Autopia with new drivers in their families. I don't care if it cost more money for insurance. When your kids start driving, make sure to register, title and insure their car in THEIR name not yours. I know this situation is different because it was dad's car being driven but I'm talking about your average case when the child is driving their own vehicle. I have never discussed what I do for a living on this forum but let's just say that I have a strong back ground in automobile law and insurance. The emotional destruction that these families will face is incomprehensible. The financial devastation will further exacerbate things. My heart goes out to all of these families who will never be the same.

Respectfully,

Patrick

It doesn't hit people until someone they know and care for is lost. I have lost a few friends because of drinking and driving. It's nothing to mess with

A similar incident happened in my home town two years ago, but with a Ford Harley Davidson F150 (Supercharged) Two teens, down a hill, rolled, and guess who was killed.......yup, the passenger.

Not doing 140 mph but traveling way too fast down a hill and around a corner.....

I would venture to say the majority of respondents to this thread have lost a dear one due to an auto accident......

I lot my best friend at the ripe age of 18 in a roll over (off road), and one on a motorcycle, plus both passengers in both accidents severely injured........

That is very sad. Sadly, not the last of these stories that we will hear. First, the fact that someone their age had access to alcohol AND an M5 creates some serious warning signs. Next, at that age, nearly any vehicle creates bad situations. Most of my friends in HS had many opportunities to be killed in various stunts they pulled in their cars (a few of which I would have been injured or killed myself as a passenger).

My thoughts are with the family though.

got to look at the bright side

they were an a private air strip

if they were that stupid on a road who knows how many people could have been kill or hurt

Very true Jim, it could have been worse.......

This kid had several speeding tickets and violations before the end. I don't know, but when I was young and living under my parents roof if I got something for Christmas or my birthday and then proceeded to use that thing inappropriately it was a sure fire way to get it confiscated by my parents. I know of a few things I never saw ever again that way lol :) Were my parents weird?

After the first speeding ticket I don't think I would have been allowed anywhere near their vehicles :D

Are you a parent or the kids buddy with money? Jeeez

Once the shock and grief has worn out the lawsuits will come and that M5 drivers parents are going to take a financial hit for this to go along with the emotional one.

The reports I read said the kids in the M5 were unbelted.

Based on the pictures I saw of what was left of the car, I'm not sure seatbelts would have helped. Trees tend to obliterate cars on impact.

Kids + horsepower + alcohol = bad things

Just yesterday, my son's half brother's friend was killed while speeding on the way to school. 60+ in a 35.

I can't imagine how hard something like that is on the parents. While your kid's friends are graduating, getting married, having kids, etc, your child's life never got to that point.

Heh heh, I really failed to properly convey what I was thinking this time :o

I think you might've missed my second post (which I put up after Yal pointed that out too):

Sorry, my bad- I didn't make my point properly...I mentioned their being unbuckled as a comment on their decision making; people who don't buckle up (let alone for high-speed activities) are IMO displaying a mindset that doesn't bode well for their longevity, for a whole lotta reasons.

In our household the catch-phrase is "it's a *test*", as in, a seriously pass/fail sort of decision that reflects a lot about a person. People who get one of those wrong (e.g., seatbelt use) are probably getting *others* wrong too (e.g., being in that car at that time), sometimes with fatal consequences.

Ive read this over on quite a few forums already. Turns out the kid was a member of m5board with the sn of AmericanM5 I believe. He actually posted topics on why his the tranny was so jerky north of 100+ mph.

That thread you posted makes me sick...I don't understand some people, why would you suggest such an idea and try to organize it.
