<strong class='bbc'>So let me get this straight .... you detail, people hang out and you give them booze? Jeepers, you must have alot of happy neighbors :-) [/b]</blockquote>
Yeah, I'm kind of like a weird form of entertainment on the cul-de-sac...no other car guys. Actually I can't decide if I'm the entertainment, or it's the fact that I always keep the little fridge in the garage stocked.:p

I've been claying for 2 weeks on my wife's Altima, only the roof and trunk so far (probably 20 mins of actual work

) ,hope to do the hood this weekend. I'm in no rush, and always end up spending more time on my car than hers. :)

Mine is dark blue, hers is light metalic blue , (... yes we like blue... ) On mine I see the dust accumulating as soon as I'm done washing it ,while hers looks good with little effort...

I would love to have a freshly detailed car in mid afternoon in the middle of a bbq.</blockquote>

Now that would be quite a site! Roasted car..... :scared

I must seriously be doing something wrong. I think I took over 1 hour and only got less than 1/4 of the car done. I'm gonna do some searches on clay techniques. Also, are u guys using bigger bars than the little mothers?

While I was down in Nashville, I got a chance to clean up a VERY RARE 2000 Nissan Silvia SpecR. But this was no ordinary S15 Silvia SpecR (if there is one), This one was heavily modified putting down 615hp to the wheels. This car was featured in the Import Tuner Magazine a couple of months ago. you can read all about the modifications here.

So this car is so fresh and mint that I didn't need a full correction. It was just scheduled to get a nice wash, clay, and a good coat of Black Fire Wet Diamond sealant.

Lets begin ..........

Here is the car before.....pretty clean I'm not gonna lie.

I began by pre-rinsing the car knocking off any heavy debris

S15fixed010.jpg

The wheels had a burnt Titanium lip and polished front faces, the faces were pretty clean and didn't have much brake dust but the inside of the wheels were pretty dirty.

I used Sonax Full Effect on the wheels

S15fixed013.jpg

With the Sonax wheel cleaner, It sprays on green and when the cleaner reacts to the iron particles fronm the break dust, it turns a dark red color. here you can see the clean faces not reacting but the inside barrels are red

Next was the Foam bath. I like to strip off any previous waxes that were on the car. The reason for this is most Carnuaba Waxes naturally deteriorate lasting only 4-6 Weeks, but the synthetic polymer sealants last 4-6 Months(Depending on the environment) So Placing Sealants on top of carnuaba waxes will cause the sealant to only last as long as the wax. So It is a important step to get a good pure paint surface, for the sealant to optimally adhere to the paint so that it last as long as possible.

So when doing a Swirl free wash, there are extra steps that can be taken to help reduce the amount of surface marring to your paint.

such as a good clean wash mitt, grit gaurds in your buckets, and other methods( which we will discuss)

Grit guards set in the bottom of your bucket to help keep the mitt off the grit, and keep the grit at the bottom, but another thing it helps with is when you wash a panel and get dirt on the mitt, you can rub your mitt on the grit guard back n forth and it pulls the grit out of the mitt. This helps keep a clean mitt for the next panel.

Another Tip that will help reduce marring on the paint is washing the Top srufaces first and then rinsing the mitt in the Gritt Guard, and then washing the lower panels. Also fliping the mitt using a clean side then rinsing in GG often.

After the car was washed and dried (using a Microfiber towel) I clay bared the surface using Blue Fine grade clay bar. The Fine grade or Ultra Fine grade will not marr up the surface but pretty much anything more aggressive then that will require some polishing afterwards. I used a diluted amount of ONR (Optimum No Rinse wash) as clay lubricant.

Then the car was brought in next to his big brother for the sealant step.

One of my favorite sealants on the market is Black Fire Wet Diamond. It's ease of use, longevity of protection, and the best part is the feel that it leaves behind. It's slickness is known all around the world! makes paint feel like silk.

Once the BFWD was wiped off after about 20-30min of curing, the car was pulled out for final shots.

Awesome write up Eric.

A lot of people will learn from this. This is the way to do it!!!!

That car looks amazing. Those tips were enormous. I bet the car gets pretty loud.

Thanks for a great writeup Eric, very informative. I know the GTR is a sick car, but I think I would go with the S15, that car is out of this world...to me. I am in love with the burnt lips on the car, such a sick look!
