Rupes Duetto
Rupes MF Cutting Pads & Rupes Zephir Gloss Coarse Gel Compound
Rupes Yellow Polishing Foam Pad & Rupes Keramik Gloss Fine Gel Polish
Lake Country HydroTech Cyan 6.5 (the thick ones) & Poorboys Polish w Sealant
Meguiars #26 Liquid Wax via red ccs hand pad
other experimentation with pws and lc ht tangerine/crimson
CG Citrus Red, Foam and 2bwm, Sonax, Pinnacle APC (tires), Optibond x2 on tires ( rubber still needing some love), Nanoskin Handitowel 7x7 clay towel (a must have), NAnoskin Glide (turns out to be a much better clay lube than onr)

My friend's girlfriend has this huge denali xl bus which I figured would make a great canvas to play with. 2003 year model with 127000 plus miles. It was donated to me to keep overnight in order to break in the rupes and my learning curve.

Vehicle came to me in better shape than I've seen it as they live on a dirt road that tends to get muddy.

pretty swirled up

passenger door

I taped off a line on the passenger door and put the rupes yellow polishing pad and yellow top fine gel on speed 2 and did my first pass
Slow start is a very nice feature. The machine takes only a couple of seconds until it buzzes into gear spinning away. The close visual of the pad spinning and throwing is a pretty cool sight as well (especially with the mf cutting discs).

This is the first time I have used a real polisher besides the da drill attachment. I guess I started with the right one because this is one sweet machine. I've never even held a griots or pcxp so I have zero baseline to compare to.

Immediately this thing felt like I had already been using it for some time. I don't know if thats a testiment to their engineering or what but it just feels right. It doesn't weight much and can easily be maneuvered with one hand as I found quite pleasant when squeezing in between the back of the denali and the closed garage door (which was less than 1 foot from the paint).

pretty nice for speed 2 and only enough pressure to make sure i didn't drop the duetto

one more pass with the speed up to 4 and light pressure

time for the rupes mf cutting pad, primed and ready with the rupes blue top compound

one pass on each side, speed 3.5ish light pressure

as you can see it left a pretty nice finish but there was still some marring that looked like it came from the pad doing its work

the rest of that side was then cut with the same method and then went over with one pass of the rupes fine gel and yellow polishing pad
here's a pic of the passenger door after the polish but before any wax

On to the hood:

Rupes MF disc and blue compund gel + rupes yellow polishing and fine gel

all done (with wax as well)

Poor Boys Polish with Sealant + Lake Country Hydro Tech Cyan Cutting 5.5
Did the whole driver side with this to see how it was going to work (I plan on using this as my goto AIO throughout the spring and summer for mobile 1 steps)
Pass with done on speed 4.5 with a little pressure

before

50-50 below

sorry not much room for side photos in the garage
pics with the brinkman

swirled side

pb pws only

by all means not as good as the other side but i will have to say i was impressed with the results. some fine scratches remain but only seen in the right lighitng and or under halogens.

sun shots: driver side pb pws, passenger side rupes compound and fine gel

poor boys side

Now some quick thoughts:
Pad observations: Duetto + Rupes pad (6 inch) was noticeably smoother to operate than equipped with the lc hydro tech foam pads (5.5 and 6.5 used). It wasn't difficult by any means to use the lc ht pads but in my experience the rupes pads provided less vibration. Additionally the rupes pads did not get near as dirty as the lydro tech pads.

I realize this is attributed to the open vs closed cell design of the two but the rupes foam pads work very well with the 'gel' polishes. It seems the rupes gel just soaks up into the pad after each pass. I used one rupes yellow pad to go over the whole passenger side plus half the hood. I used 2 lc hydro tech cyan 5.5 pads to cover the driver side with pws. Both of these pads became almost black. The rupes mf disc did not.

Rupes Cutting Disk: 6inch. Crazy design. Never used a megs mf disc or any other brand so no real baseline but it cut pretty well in my opinion and left a very nice finish. I wil be experimenting on using this with one of their fine polishes on my vehicle soon. The pad did shed a little bit but im sure that is normal. It was only a few small pieces. It did dust a little bit as well but I might have been using too much polish, or not enough, I primed it and then put 3-4 pea sized drops of the gel on there.

Hydrotech Pads: I used all three variously but settled with the cyan cutting pad and pws because it took the most of the swirls out and finished better than the tangerine pad left the paint looking (for lack of cutting ability).

Rupes Gels: I only got the blue (compound) and yellow (fine) polish with the kit but I have the medium and ultra fine on order and more pads to match as well. I will be experimenting with the pads and gel combos from rupes to see if i can find a good one step for cut and finish.

Poorboys Polish w Sealant: This stuff is awesome. the latest polish chart i saw has this rated as a 4 on cut and I'd have to say that it works pretty well for an aio. I wanted to compare it against xmt 360 but got overtaken with the size of the vehicle and never got around to it. It left a finish almost as smooth as the 2 step polish with rupes gels/pads

Unless you looked at the paint in the right lighting or with a brinkman you could not tell the difference from passenger to driver side. And there was, of course, a noticeable difference.

Anyways Thanks for viewing. Questions/comments always welcome

Well done review and thanks for sharing.

Usually that paint is hard in my experience, shows how well the Rupes works in cutting and finishing.

Have to check my budget for a Duetto.

Brandt !
Wow - beautiful job !
That honking big bus looks brand new !!
You did a great job of staying away from the Pinstripes which look like they are about to go..
It is ok to use pressure to help the correcting..

Your Hydro-Shreds got dirty because they were removing dirt ! I have to clean mine with a towel between passes until they are no longer able to be cleaned and then I change it out to another one..

Congratulations ! I am sure the people were amazed !!!

thanks. yeah i was worried about correcting close to the pinstripes. they were trying to come off from the clay towel as well. they are definitely on their way out and i offered to fully remove them but she didn't care either way so i figured it would be good experience working around them. overall no pinstriping was hurt in this just smooted out a little bit more.

thanks. i liked the hydro shreds but have not had any shedding experiences as of yet. i will post if/when i do. i was surprised how well it finished for its stiffness on the surface.

still kinda afraid to try the rupes blue foam pad..that thing feels like sandpaper

i like the closed cell idea but its going to take a little getting used to im sure. but even with the closed cell design the hydro tech pads did not clean up as well as the rupes pads after the same agitation and pad wash soak/washing machine cycle

and holy crap these pads are hard to take off the bp! the rupes pads fit perfectly snug on the bp and take some elbow grease to pry off

Excellent review! The Rupes "system" is really amazing and Duetto has tons of power. Great correction, particularly considering it was your first time using a "real" polisher. While you are correct - it is a testament to Rupes' engineering, it is also a testament to your quick learning ability. :bigups

thanks todd. im definitely a fan of this machine and its engineering. im sure i will have a 21 or the mini by this summer but this duetto is a beast. i haven't even turned it up to 5 or 6 yet

Brandt -

Glad the Hydro-Shreds worked great for you... I clean mine with a packed of Snappy Clean in a bucket and about 2-3 gallons of water, depending on how many are in there.. I just soak them, put on some long rubber gloves so the solution doesnt take all the oils out of my skin, and fold them in half in the water and scrub them back and forth, going all the way around the pad..
Then, rinse them well, and its good ! This Snappy Clean is non foaming, so easy to use and easy to rinse out... Has never hurt any finishes or pads in over 6 years...

I really like the Cyan on harder to correct paintwork with harder paint... It really cuts through the defects and finishes down incredibly clear and glossy...

I have found for my needs and process, the harder pads are better - especially with Rotary Power, to eliminate as much "flexing" from all the parts involved and give me all the rotation power I can get... Harder pads get softer as they warm up anyway...

When you are doing this to support yourself, you want to optimize as much as possible...

Yes, some of these pads really stick to the backing plates, so be careful about how you go about peeling it off to not damage and loosen the material from the back of the pad...

Again, great job !!! Great adapting to your first new machine !!! As you keep using it, you will find more ways to improve technique and the quality of the work..
But, it looks like you are already way, way, ahead of the curve !!!

We are all so proud of you !!!!

thanks for the kind words dan.
i actually used snappy clean and warm water and pretty much the same method you described above. the ht pads did come clean of product but the pad did not turn out completely blue (wasn't expecting 100% color back but im not sure if im using the right brush - walmart denture brush)

its funny because one of the blue pads is stained almost in the shape of the state of texas
rupes mf cutting pads (not shown) came out perfect

you see the blue ht assembled. currently putting sip1500 on my metallic black dodge- experiencing good results and what looks like a pretty dang good finish. but it could use some more gloss

i forgot i took this video of the pb polish w sealant single pass with the ht cyan pad

sorry for the quality. my evo2 only works so well and im still getting use to taking pics with the brinkman

and below is a pretty good 50/50 of the hood. (courtesy of rupes pads/polishes)- please disregard my friend trying to sing in the background- he would soon kill the battery to the denali as he claimed "would not happen due to a safety shutoff feature" which apparently included the complete lack of vehicle ignition. :)

Im thinking the staining came from the product you were using...

I use nothing but Menzerna compounds or Sonax Profiline Perfect Finish 4/6, and occasionally Optimum Hyper-Polish and I never get anything in the pads that wont come out with Snappy Clean... I use the entire packet of Snappy Clean to the 2-3 Gallons hot water...

Some Compounds have lots of oils, gooey stuff in them, etc., that sometimes wont wash off... The products I mentioned above are body shop safe so that implies they can be removed so that painting on top will not cause problems during/later...

What I do when correcting is have a bucket of water and 1 packet SnappyClean mixed and I throw the pads in there as I go, make sure they are all immersed and fully soaking up the cleaner, and then at the end, wash them in that solution and rinse..
If they are really gunked up from the gunk they removed from the paintwork, I might have to mix up a new batch and wash them 1 at a time in it and rinse and they always come out perfect...

Don't be afraid to use the Rupes blue foam
Pad. The Rupes MF pad you used is more aggressive. :)

great turnaround. nice 50 50 shots! Nice save!
thanks. i was hoping to get a real nice 50/50 of the hood in the sun but it didn't work out

you are right, i just cleaned menz 1500 and 4500 right off of the rupes yellow and ht cyan with the same method i used the first time to clean the pads. i guess i will have a couple of the ht cyan pads specifically for pb pws

Great job
thanks ron. i wished i had some black ice to throw on top of that bus. i put a little dodo purple haze on the passenger door and it looked noticeably better than the panels next to it that were covered with #26

good point.

didn't you purchase this kit as well?
have you tried the blue, green, or white rupes pad? the blue pad just feels very coarse, i have some of their green pads and white ones as well and the white feels almost velvety smooth

I cancelled at the last minute. I'm going to stick with my Flex 3401 for now. I love the forced rotation

i would like to try the flex one day but i know the learning curve on the felx is much more than using something as easy as this duetto was

guess you gotta start somewhere though
