Rubbing Compound

I just did a search this morning for "rubbing compounds." I could not find anything that speaks of its affects so I'll give you the scoop of what happened. My buddy and I were detailing one of our cars and we accidentally used rubbing compound on the hood and we did not know what the effect was/is. I sure hope it didn't take off the clear coat, I do not remember seeing any red paint come off etc. Thanks in advance.

not enough info. does it look damaged? maybe you just got rid of some swirls. or maybe you added some swirls. i hope you have some protection on it though. that is bare paint if not.

What rubbing compound was it?

I know TW RC is super course, but I bought some 3M FCRC and wonder if it'll be as abrasive as you say.

The damage done can only really judged by looking at it (or maybe a high res pic). Does it look really messed up or is it okay? You kind of have to decide yourself and maybe try poking at it with milder products to see what you have. Rubbing compound won't just eat through paint in a snap, and it depends on what product you've used and how long you worked it.

The hood looks perfect, the rubbing compound is at my buddies house, so I'll find out what it was tomorrow and post that. As far as the hood once again it looks perfect. I put three coats of wax on in five weeks in case I rid the car of its clear coat. I put the rubbing compound of and as soon as it hazed 3-5 mins at the most I buffed it off. Thanks.

Did you buff the compound off by hand, pc, or high speed buffer? Whichever one you used, could help us decide what to do to correct it. Jason

 Wait, are you saying that the hood shows no sign that anything's wrong, and that you just laid the rubbing compound on the hood like it was a wax, let it sit there, and then buffed it off??

Correct me if I'm getting you wrong, but if that's the case I'd say you haven't done anything and you can relax. :) Rubbing and polishing compounds need to be massaged into the paint to do much at all. You can go over it with a paint cleanser if you're worried you've made invisible micro-scratches, but if it looks fine I'd say leave it.

I treated it as though it were wax, let it haze and buffed off. I did all this by hand, I hope I am not too much of an idiot. I'm just worried about the clear coat, etc... thanks for the help in advance.

If you did it by hand you probably did no real harm at all. If the finish is hazy use a good swirl mark remover (fine pollish) to remove the micro scratches, than wax.

i bet it looks good if you didn't add little scatches. but, you should have noticed that already. i have to do my whole truck. i am not looking forward it except the end result.
