Rotary plate and pad setup.

I was just wondering what everyone is mainly using on there rotary polishers? some pics would be nice, if not just brands sizes would be cool. thanks.



I'm just learning and it seems my setup is to big.



I just picked up the dewalt 849. I am using what looks like 6" backing plate with edge velcro 8" or 9" classic pads. The backing plate fits tight in the velcro pad. I sometimes have to lift the little edge that kind of over laps the backing plate. :nixweiss

I use a variety. Mainly I go with a 4 and 3/4 inch backing plate with 6.5 inch LC Pads. Then for certain areas, I go with a 2 3/4 inch backing plate with 4 inch pads. I also have the Edge2000 Adapter so I can use some 8inch double sided pads if needed. This is all for a rotary.

How do you like the edge 6" pads on your rotary? I ask because I picked up a cheap rotary (HF) and I have a few Edge 6" pads to use.
 
I really like them... I go between the 6 and 8", depending on what I'm working with... Never had a problem with them
 
Thanks for the reply! I've just ordered an Edge rotary adapter and rotary BP for 6.5" pads (meguiars). I'll use the rotary on my first detail (personal) next year! :buffing:
 
My setup is as follows



2 3/4 inch LC backing plate for 3.5 to 4 inch pads

3 3/4 inch LC plate for 5.5 inch

4 3/4 inch LC plate for 6 inch and up to 7 inch

6 inch LC plate for 6.5 to 7.5 inch

7 inch Edge plate (14mm) for 7.5 to 8.5 inch pads

SVR, you use,



-3 3/4 inch LC plate for 5.5 inch

-4 3/4 inch LC plate for 6 inch and up to 7 inch



I think one of these setups would work well! which do you use more? or would work better with my existing setup?



I have 8" foam classic edge setup already.



Are LC foam pads closer to Meguiars foam pads in texture?

because edge pads don't feel as nice in texture at all IMO.
 
If I'm working on a slopy panel, I like to use the 3 3/4 plate for 6 and 6.5 inch pads as it gives the pad more flexibility



4 3/4 is perfect most of the time for those 6 to 7 inch pads



Edge pads use gritty texture for abrasive power whereas lake's use stiffness

I like how edge foam works but I find the green and yellow pads hard to use, they want to vibrate all over the place



Meg's burgundy foams are smoother than edge (closed cell I think) but still have some grittiness



Lake's are lovely and smooth, the gray and blue pads are really soft.
 
I just started on the rotary, but 8" pads seem large to me, unless I'm doing hood, roof, trunk or any large flat panel. I would think I would have a better time using 6" all the way. does this sound like it makes sense? I don't mind using large 8" soft pads to glaze or wax, But I am so use to 6" pads for polishing.



Does anyone use just 6" on rotary for entire job?

Would there be a difference in rotary control? or effectiveness? I am just learning.
 
I wish more people would chime in, so I would have a better idea.



I have a lot to learn, I already know that I could remove swirls much quicker with Rotary then PC. I have trouble picking up product sometimes, flinging product is not fun! I also am looking into products that will give me time to play, as some products I'm using seem to be done 123. Or it could be my unexperienced, I even tried priming the pad with a squirt or two of AM Body Shine, it seemed to have given me a bit more time.
 
Has anyone tried these pads?

If you want a product that gives a long working time try the optimum line of compounds and polishes. They hardly create any dust and you can work them for a long time too.



I use 6" pads with my rotary and they're very easy to control. I've not used a rotary for more than 6 months but this setup seems to work well. I've read that smaller pads are easier to control than a larger one.

Those pads are without a doubt the best on the market.



The wool pads are softer so they skip less so you reduce the chance of getting holograms on the paint.



The Solo foam pads are also excellent for final polishing and applying glazes. They are very smooth when being used.



Having used Edge pads and LC pads i now only use the Meguiars Solo pads.



Being 7.5inch in size they are slightly smaller than the normal 8inch rotary pad which can be good for beginners and experts alike. The Solo pads really have a good combo, wool pads for cutting and foam pads for polishing.



Once you've used the wool pads for swirl removal you wont go back to foam.



I dont use the Solo liquid either. I use Menzerna and it works extremely well with these pads. The burgandy heavy cut wool pad with Menzerna powergloss can remove heavy oxidation, light scratches and sanding marks very quickly. In most cases without any swirls and minimal marring. On the last white car i did the paint was ready for LSP.



The light cut wool pad is my favourite, i use it with Meguiars #66 quick detailer and i can perform miracles quickly with a single step. Moderate swirls removed while leaving no marring just a slick glossy surface.
