rotary: flexible vs solid...

resurrecting this after searching. i have the exact same question and am interested to know if the meg's 6" backing plate i have been using is good compared to a flexible backing plate.

I guess it is all preference and what type of pads you use. I have about 6 different backing plates and it depends on the car and pad. I also use the edge 8" foam pads and the are flexible just enough and stiff when flat. I am liking these pads alot. Best bet is to try some and see if you like the feel. It's like finding a glove, bat, golf clubs...It's all preference.

I know megs SOLO has a new backing plate and pads with more cushion on it and it looks nice. Most body shop stores have them in stock now. They also have the solo pads too with the diamond cuts in them.

Curious..what buffer do you have?

Flexable will not be as hot as stiff (they generate less heat considering no body pressure on both), but it's not much difference. I do prefer flexable for what it's worth. I have a stiff backing plate and I haven't used it in years.

thanks for the replies. i am using the hitachi rotary. i was wondering about this because in many of the videos i've seen with rotary use, the operator has a flexible back plate. i'll just pick one up and give it a try.

I've used both and I prefer the flexible urethane backing plates. They make it easier to follow body contours and get into tight spaces.
