RIP Porter Cable 7424

:( 20 months of very regular use commercially took its toll. I was hoping it was the cord but after checking the wiring and even cutting out a section, no worky. Was just fine on Thursday, took it out yesterday (Tuesday) to polish out a Rolls, primed the pad with product, set the pad on the car and turned on my PC. Nothing. Zero, zip, nada.

Luckily, there is a Lowe's about 7-8 miles from where I was working so I hauled down there and picked up a 7336 for $109. I knew I should have snagged one when they were on sale for $69. Oh well, next time I will. Nice to have a back-up on hand. Either that or get my 7424 fixed if the price is reasonable.

I have noticed the 7336's larger counter-weight does cut down somewhat on vibration.

I also feel the counter weight cuts down on vibration. I use my pc 7424 at speed 6 the time.

I have a cyclo comming in soon. so i have back up. sorta.

I think this goes to show that Port-Cable puts out a quality product. With as much as you use yours scott, I was thinking it would've failed sooner.

Agreed, for the price and probably 5-10+ hours of use per week for 20 months, it did pretty well.

Scott have you considered buying the Meguiar's G100? It comes with a lifetime warranty and from what I understand Megs will pretty much replace the machine no questions asked. Costs a bit more than $109, but free replacements for life sounds nice.

I thought about it but I doubt Meguiars could have shipped it to me in 30 minutes. I needed a new one immediately.

I'm probably going to buy a Cyclo before spring so maybe my new PC will last longer. :)

Hey Scott,

It sounds like the brushes need replacing. If you pull off the housing, they are held in place with T5 torx screws. They will wear out with a lot of use. I killed a PC last year, but mine was a bearing or bushing that finally packed her in, but that was after a lot of use! :)

Scott..in using power tools in both my businesses for 27 years I am certain you just have a bad wire.....either the power cord from the stress of wrapping the cord when not in use or the switch wires. You may have time to find and repair yourself or go to a Porter Cable ( actually any power tool) service center and it may cost you around 35.00 for service.

Scott, after so many months of use of the 7424. Do you feel like the 7336 is more aggressive/has more force? I would think with the larger counterwieght it would cause it to be a little more aggressive, even if it is better balanced.

Gee, I somehow missed this thread....

ScottWax- heh heh, I see you're still considering the Cyclo. You won't wear one of *those* out ;)

wickedwrx02- My older one only lasted about three years but my other one is still doing fine after more than five. It's sorta a crapshoot.

Neo62381- Hope you don't mind my answering (I've used PCs with both counterweights and all sizes of pads). You won't find any difference in aggressiveness due to the counterweight. The biggest thing you can do to make a PC more aggressive is use 4" pads. FWIW I use the 6" counterweight with those too.

Hard to tell without using them side by side. Stepping up to a 6" backing plate did make a noticable difference though.

5-10 per week is all? Wow.... you must still be doing alot by hand and/or have alot of "wash only" customers. Mine sees (or at least was before I got a rotary) about that same number of hours per week during the summer detailing season, and that's just with doing full polish-outs on two vehicles each week on average (one each saturday/sunday). After having my rotary, though, I've reduced that to 2-6 hours each week, since the rotary can do the brunt of the work.

I've had my G100 (A PC-7335) since December of 2001 and the bearings in it are JUST starting to go bad. I wonder how much difference is played by having the different counterweight/backing plate on it, as far as longevity is concerned..... :nixweiss

You must have missed the + at the end of the 10. Some weeks I don't do a lot of polishing, others it seems I buff all day. When my kids and I did all those cars in the direct sun at the law firm over the summer, I bet I spent close to 5-6 hours of polishing each day!

Yeah, I saw the "+" but figured the 10 was an average/normal maximum.... :o

So you definitely got more use out of it than I am getting
