Ridgid 12 gallon 5hp with "auto detailing kit"

I bought a wet-dry vac today, after a few months of thinking over models I just decided to take part of my pay check and get myself one. Mike (tpgsr) was going to buy one since I will probably, inevitably, use it for work on customer cars, but I don't care, it has a lifetime warranty and if anything happens it would be bound to happen if I was using it on my own car.

Now, I bought the 4 gallon, 5 horsepower ridgid that is compact and nice. I got it home and the motor didn't fit onto the base. Looking at it, the plastic had bent. The box wasn't dented in too much (compared to all of the other boxes). I tried it out just to make sure it was what I wanted, and truth be told it wasn't as powerful as I had expected. It had one attatchment and I wanted more. This one was $69.00.

So back to the other Home Depot. The lady gave me cash back no problem, I showed her what happened and she understood.

I went to the aisle and I looked at the 4 gallon, and the 12 gallon. At this Home Depot, the 12 gallon was $59.00, at the other it was $69.00. I decided if what happened to the other one happened fairly easily, it could happen again and I really don't want to be inconvienced.

The 12 gallon has quite a bit of attatchments, and two hoses. One is a 2.5" x 7' (comes with 2 ext. wands, 2 floor nozzles, and a 'car' attatchment) and you can connect a 1.25" x 11' hose that comes with it's own crevice tool and car attatchment.

This thing has so much more suction power than the other (maybe it was because the other one didn't seal, I don't know), but I vacuumed the kitchen with it and it was picking the throw rugs off of the floor.

Now, the only problem is the only place it fits in my car is either on the passengers seat, or on the rear seat. I hope it doesn't ever tip, but I'll put a blanket under it and put it in a garbage bag. I think this minor draw back is worth having all this power.

:xyxthumbs :xyxthumbs :xyxthumbs I like it a lot.

If you put it in the front seat, put the seat belt around it. :) Also, if your Home Depot is like the ones near me, they sell individual attachments for the Rigid in case you didn't get soemthign you wanted. Enjoy!!!

That's a good idea. I could do that in the back seat too. :D

This thing is loud though, I may get the muffler/noise diffuser. I don't know. All shop vacs seem to be loud it seems.

So should I pick-up a Craftsman Wet-Dry Shop Vac or a Rigid?

Sales end at Sears tomorrow - 5/29/04.

I purchased the 5 HP Ridgid as well. Great machine with plenty of suction. I vacuum the garage frequently and it stays spotless. The filter is cleanable with water which is a nice feature although I suspect I will buy a new one often anyway to get extra power. :)

It is very loud. I plan on getting the muffler tomorrow at Home Depot.

I have no experience with Craftsman Ranney and I would hate to steer you wrong...

Anyone else have any experience with the 5HP model? Its pretty cool i thought, i gave it a thorough going over last weekend, with the exception of plugging it in and trying...I have a 2.5 hp model now that is noisier than the neighbors teenage daughter on a friday night.......But I hate the wheels on it!!! I would rather have the one that skids......Its very compact, 5 HP you would think it would suck pretty good.......

I picked up the 6.5hp Contractor Grade 16gallon for 99.00 a few weeks ago a Home Depot. Comes with all the muffler, toys, and easy push cart. lifetime warranty... Retail was 149.99 online.

99.00 on sale/clearance.

Fairly quit with the muffler.

I think you'll like it either

That would have been even more difficult to fit into the Accord! :)

But I did see that, and it looked like a nice deal for $99.

Yipppppieeeeee...

I finally decided and went down to Home Depot today and picked up the 16 gal 6.0 HP Rigid wet-dry vac for $69.00 that came with a extra filter. Also picked-up the car detailing kit ($23.00) and muffler ($11.00). So out the door for about $105.00.

I couldn't be any happier. Thanks guys!

Thanks for the heads up. I believe recent purchases are alright.

The recall is for both the Rigid and Craftsman Wet/Dry Vacs purchased between March 1999 through October 2002.

"The vacuums were sold at Home Depot stores and RIDGE Tool distributors nationwide from March 1999 through October 2002 and Sears Roebuck & Co. stores nationwide from September 1998 through October 2002 for between $70 and $300."

Hazard: The exhaust blower ports on the wet/dry vacuums are large enough for a small child to reach inside and touch the spinning blower wheel. This poses a laceration hazard to small children.

Remedy: Consumers should contact Emerson toll-free number to request a free insert. The insert is installed inside the blower port to eliminate the hazard.
