Review on Collinite 845 Insulator Wax

And IMO, if Collinite wanted to up their revenues they could just put their stuff in more snazzy packaging to give it better shelf appeal. Silly as I find it, I do think that people probably gravitate towards "!NEW! FANCY!" sounding products from companies that sound more impressive.

I completely agree. Early on, I didnt give this product the light of day because it looked boring. Over time, I have come to realize thats its one of the most popular products out there.

Can 845 be used on glass and plastic trim as well? How about 476s? I think I read somewhere that 476 should not touch plastic... though not sure how long the stain remains.. If neither, is there a preferable long lasting product for glass / plastic?

Yeah, it can. I've never had it stain plastic or trim (at least not that I can recall) and I use if for this on the vehicles that get Collinite. Right now I have it on most of the plastic trim on my '04 DenaliXL.

I don't LSP glass, but others do.

476S generally works OK on trim and plastic too. I put a base of 845 on first and that might help, dunno for sure. I even used 476S on the exterior rubber of the Volvo 245 wagon I used to have..it looked crappy when it needed redone but that was the only downside.

I *do* employ a W-O-W-O approach when using LSPs on trim though; it's not really so much a case of this preventing white stains, but it does keep excess product from doing that and it seems to make for a more streak-fee/uniform look
.

I do find that the Klasse twins are at least as good as 845 and, layered, the KSG lasts longer. Again, I employ a W-O-W-O approach.

VM works well too but doesn't last all that long (you can top with 845 or 476s).

UPP spray works very well as long as you clean the surfaces first as needed (especially if oxidized). I use this on areas where it'd be a PIA to use conventional products (the plastic cowl at the base of windshields, where the wipers park, is a perfect example). I then refresh it from time to time with more UPP spray (no need to re-AIO) and/or FK425 after every wash.

I also use UPP for this on my S8 and Souveran on the trim of my XJS.

Actually, I only use the conventional ERV dressing approah on the *very* rare occasions when one of these LSPs doesn't work out, which is almost always a result of worn/weathered trim, which doesn't always respond as well as trim in good condition.

Thanks.. Good Information there...

still test it on trim, it stains my silverado plastic bumper cap

Huh, glad you posted that as it never woulda occurred to me. What part are you talking about (sorry, I'm not following "bumper cap" :o ). On the Denali XL and the '00 Blazer before that, I 845ed *everything*.

How did you prep it before the 845 and what application/removal method did you use. I'm very interested in your experience as I keep recommending 845 as being trim-friendly.

the plastic on the bumpers, I cleaned it then tested it out and the plastic turned white, maybe it wasnt cleaned well enough?

Huh  I'm trying to picture how the bumpers are on your truck...gotta admit I'm not remotely familiar with any GM trucks/SUVs except the ones I've driven and that's a mighty short list :o

Wonder how the 845 woulda worked for you had you used KAIO first.

Did you let it dry before buffing or do a wipe-on-wipe-off?

I wiped it on, let it sit and wiped it off. and this is on the cap, the lower valance is painted and i dont put anything on it, just clean it

Dkblue05- Thanks for posting that pic, *now* I understand. Nice looking truck too.

Funny, that looks like just the sort of material I use 845 on  Wonder if how long you let it sit makes a huge difference as that seems like the only thing you and I might do differently, well, that and the use of something like KAIO or 1Z PP first. Oh well :nixweiss

If that were mine, and I knew 845 was a bad idea, I'd probably be using the Klasse twins on that (and the lower part too) and then just refreshing it with UPP spray or even just FK425 after each wash. Maybe the UPP spray by itself would be worth trying.

I dunno...there are a zillion ways to go..what're you doing on it now and how do you like it?

Hello Everyone!

First time member here. Came here to talk to you about

Collinite 845 wax.

Though I wax my car regularly (have used Zaino), I really know

very little about wax in general and have based my knowledge and

purchases on what I read in the forums.

Just bought a Cadillac RSX and it is in need of a wax job. I have

lots of questions and I hope some of you can take the time to answer.

I thought ZAINO was the wax to beat but it seems like Collinite is even

better.

I am about to purchase the wax from Amazon.

First question: Do I need a pre-prep before using this wax? The

reason I ask is that at least with ZAINO, they want you to use their

"All In One" cleaner prior to applying the wax. Something about the

wax bonding better with its use. To be honest, it's a pain in the ***

to have to go through a wash, dry, pre-prep, buff, wax, buff.

...but I'll do whatever it takes.

So, with Collinite 845, do I only need to use the wax without pre prep?

Mind you, I don't use clay bars mainly because I never studied how they

work.

Next question....

I also see a product called Collinite Super Double Coat Wax.

Does this need/should be used in conjunction with the 845? If so,

what is the order of application.

Moving on....

There is talk about the need to remove the wax in the spring.

Is this really essential? Am I really harming the process by just

applying a new layer of wax every 5-6 months? Will regular car

washes over that period remove enough of the wax?

Finally....

I am here on the East Coast. At best, I will be applying the wax

in 40 degree weather. Will that be okay? I plan to take the car

to a brushless car wash/hand dry facility first before applying the wax.

Any other tips you could provide would be most helpful.

Happy Holidays to everyone!
