Requesting Assistance - Meguiar's D151 + Rupes Pads For Correction

Hi Everyone,

I'm using Rupes' system and I purchased D151 in hope of offering one step polish to a few friends but I cannot seem to get any correction with Rupes pads + D151.

I'm using Rupes 15ES and Rupes Mini as the polishers and I own the following pads:

Rupes Blue MF pads

Rupes Green Foam pads

Rupes Yellow Foam pads

Rupes White Foam pads

My test subject is a 2013 Hyundai genesis coupe in red

I tried Rupes Green Foam pads + D151 and Rupes Yellow Foam pads + D151. In both cases I did not see a difference after 6-8 passes. In fact, with Rupes Green Foam pads + D151 I actually instilled micro-marring on the paint.

On the other hand, with Rupes Green Foam pads + Rupes White Diamond Polish I can knock out the minor swirls but not the slightly deeper scratches. I actually stepped up to Rupes Blue MF pads + Rupes Zephir Compound for slightly deeper scratches.

My technique with the foam pads is I would prime the pad with product then spread it slightly on the section I'm working on then set the polisher speed to 6 and move my arms about an inch per second.

What am I doing wrong or what else can I try to get some results with D151? I had always thought D151 has more cut than M205 and that Rupes White Diamond Polish was similar in cut to M205. Hmm..

I think your biggest obstacle is the "red" base color... especially if it is non-metallic.

IMO, You will be hard pressed to get any AIO to finish well on a non-metallic base color in black/red while targeting mild defects.

6-8 passes is overworking D151 in my experience... I'm surprised you are not complaining about dust.

I also find that AIOs/D151 perform better (for me) with the use of a traditional D/A... I.E.- added pressure seems to benefit the cut/finish greatly.

The only AIO I will use with a Rupes machine is HD Speed... but I haven't used this combo on a solid base color either.

When using 151 I tend to...

"Get in and Get out" with 151... spread quickly @ speed 3, one pass @ speed 4-5, two passes tops.

Clean on the fly after completing a section or every other at the very least.

Use ample product.

Change pads often... AIOs tend to clog pads quickly even when cleaning them often

B&S Green or LC Pink are the pads I prefer for AIO use... no experience with the Rupes pads.

You would probably better served by a dedicated polish and LSP, if the base color is indeed non-metallic.

If you are not getting paid for the time/ don't have the time to do a 1-step and LSP, then keep playing with the pads and your technique. I think you may be asking a little much of 151 given the desire of notable defect removal and finishing perfectly.  You can probably choose one in this scenario...and it's probably not going to be finishing perfectly.

-Gabe

Honestly for all of that work you are doing you'd be better off just doing an actual 1-3 step polish with a topper.  D151 isn't really a "corrective" type of product in my opinion.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I guess I'm really trying to justify my purchase by finding a use for D151

What are you guys using D151 for? Maybe I should dedicate it to my exterior detail package (wash, clay, and seal with D151 by DA)

I agree. D151 is great for waking up beat up finishes but I wouldn't use it for correction. Power finish was supposed to be great for 1 steppers but it was a pita to work with. UNO is great but leaves a bit of haze unless you switch pads at which point you might as well use HD polish.

The D151 experience I had was so good - I sold the bottle to a buddy that liked the stuff. I was trying to 1 step a black VW Jetta, and I thought it just needed a little polish, looked good that night I finished - but next day - out in the sun and it looked like crap! There were these wax like halograms where I didn't get all of the D151 off. I was lucky they came off with some quick detailer and a lot of muscle and it was BEFORE I waxed it.

In your opinion what color do you think is 'acceptable' to use D151 on a beat up paint? Thanks for the hint about the other products

Like your suggestion, I continued polishing the car yesterday with HD Polish and almost done. I guess my D151 will go hibernate on a shelf

I find its perfect for whites, silvers, etc but again, to make things look better, not perfect. Think grandmas car.
