Repairing cracked clear

Sorry, I didn't know where else to put this question. I've been noticing the paint on my truck is cracking. It's a 2001 GMC Sonoma ZR2, Black, and has 70k miles. I've always took excellent care of it, but it sits outside 24/7. Ever since I got it it's had nothing but Zaino. However, I have a company vehicle I drive mostly during the week and the truck doesn't get as much attentino as it used to. The paint on the top is horrible, and it's starting to do the same on the top of the fenders. Imagine a flock of birds with sharp claws walking around on the top. The cracks are everywhere, about 1/4" long and very thin. I don't have a digital camera available tonight, so no pics yet. Since the truck sits up so high, I haven't noticed the cracks until this evening.

Anyhow....I have some experience with paint, and I know that if you buy the good paint in a spray can it's pretty much the same paint that the body shop uses. My question is, with proper prep and wetsanding how durable would 2 or 3 coats of black with 2 or 3 coats of clear be? I know I can make it look good, but I don't wanna have to do it again in 6 months. I know I should probably take it and get it repainted, but there's no way that's gonna happen anytime soon and it would look better with a simple coat of Krylon than it does right now. Thanks!

Cracking clear coat is more a symptom of a bad factory paint job that lack of maintenance. See if that vehicle has some type of warranty on the paint and if it still applies take the truck to the dealership.

Don't worry, there won't be any Krylon around. From the PPG defect chart it looks to be some type of crow's footing or checking, but on a larger scale because these are visible from 5 ft away. I don't think they can be sanded down, so I'll probably go with some touchup paint and spend a few hours filling the cracks. Then, I'll wetsand and polish.

What grit sandpaper should I use? I'm thinking 2000 and up, can a 2000 grit be polished out with DACP and a polishing pad?
