Removing Vinyl

Hi folks,

I had my pickup truck professionally vinyled for my business. Now, I need to remove the vinyl so I can sell it. Do you have any tips for me? So far, I've been using a heat gun on a low setting, but it is very slow going. Even when I get the vinyl off, there is still some adhesive residue.

Thanks in advance.

Theres nothing else you can do...its very time consuming, but hang in there...get some goo gone or WD40 to get the adhesive off...wipe lightly too~!

Heat gun is your best bet though...

Removing vinyl is a nightmare. I know I am selling one of my vans, and she was covered in vinyl. The adhesive removal can be a PITA !!! Goo gone and products like these have a limited effect, and I found that lacquar thinner is the fastest way to get off the adhesive, but I would use it with caution and wear a good set of gloves.

Getting this aggressive could poossibly damage the clear, so although I had success with the thinner, I would try it out on a small area first, and remove the thinner quickly from the surface.

Good Luck.

I tired the heat gun. Even on high settings... PITA all around. Normally I just heat up the powerwasher to it's 200*+ and let it go to town. Very long precess no matter what you do.

I removed 10 year old vinyl graphics from my race car last summer. Royal PITA. A heat gun is your friend, don't attempt this job without one. Heat and peel in small sections. After awhile you will get the hang of it. Remove any adhesive that doesn't come off with solvents, up to and including lacquer thinner if necessary (last resort, it's powerful). Do not under any circumstances try Mr Clean Magic Eraser, no matter how desperate you get.

Good luck!

Anyone try steam?? I haven't used it to remove vinyl before, but I have used it to remove window tint with great results, the adhesive and all comes up when you get it hot. The steamer put out about 250 degree steam so it got hot! I don't know if it will work for the vinyl or not, but thought that it was worth a try...

I work at a sign shop and we do all sorts of vinyl installs, many which require the removal of old vinyl. Usually i just use a heat gun and some stuff called "rapid remover", it's made by a company called RapidTac. Plastic razor blades also come in handy. The worst part is the adhesive residue but there are a ton of products you can use to remove it.

If you really want to look into it, try this website Welcome to FELLERS - The World's Largest Wrap Supply Company

You'll have to call for pricing but they have everything you can imagine when it comes to vinyl removal.

Yeah you can use a steamer. I haven't used one to remove vinyl personally, but i know people that use them with success.

Heat really is the way to go. People use weed torches to aid in the removal of car wraps.

Well, it looks like I came to the right place.

Thanks for all the input, I won't mind doing it so much as long as I know there wasn't a better way out there that I just didn't know about.
