Removing pin stipes BIG PROB! HELP!

My freind decied to remove his pin stipes on his 98 tahoe and well look at the pictures...



he removed them all then came to me with this...I have never seen this before. it is almost as if the paint is burned darker, I used tarmanator, followed by clay, followed by p106ff, followed by powergloss and nothing... just made the paint look nice on the one panel. Its odd as some panels such as the front fenders are clean a clean can be but others well you can tell. any ides of what can remove this AND OR why its like this. thanks in advance.

It's sticker haze.

You are just cleaning and polishing...you need to remove the adhesive. The best way to remove stickers is with an eraser wheel.



I would try a little adhesive remover, or non-penatrating thinner.



It will come out, you just need to find the right product. We just removed tape stripes from a '91 Accord at work, with an eraser wheel, and you'de never know they were there.

3M Adhesive Remover is made for this. Any parts store should have it.

A number of companies sell the eraser wheels, check with an autobody/paint supply place. Also check there for 3M Adhesive Remover. It's good for jobs like that and handy to have around for all sorts of other things.

I remove an aweful lot of pin stripes and tarminator or 3m adhesive remover are perfect for it. If more aggression is needed and you plan on polishing use a plastic razor blade.

Technically this isn't paint but a colored vinyl stripe that was removed. So keep working on the 3M or the eraseer wheel

Yeah erasser wheel, like $15 for the body shop supply place, works but pain in the ***. Takes a while and the erasser gets all over you. I used a battery drill and used up over 2 fully charged batteries doing it. What/how did he remove them?

he used (desipt my advice) brake cleaner and goo gone along with a razor blade. now he is stuck with what is pictured above...

Could be ghosting. I have run across this on a few occasions. Removed pins stripes or letters and had ghosts of them. Tries all the above plus wetsanding. Made only a small improvement. They could be seen from certain angles.

this is what im thinking it is just becuse how smooth the paint is in the effected areas cant feel anything but smoothness...

How about goo gone or goof off? You need to remove the adhesive the polish down the paint afterwards.

I've never heard of ghosting before. What is the definition and technical cause of it?

Not really sure of actual cause but could be one or a combination of the following. Surrounding paint oxidation, adhesive soaking into paint, UV damage. I would also say perfect paint but i have wet sanded the area and polished and it did not remove it totally.

Assumint it is in fact smooth and 100% of the residue is gone, then some type of chemical reaction took place, though I'm no pin-stripping expert. But I can say Goof-Off type products will cause "adhesive soak" as mentioned above which can actually saturate into and literally etch paint...I've learned that lesson the hard way once when removing badges...and the etching exactly mirrored the badge shape where the adhesive was...require wetsanding to remedy 90%. Either way, put new pin stipes back on and call it a day.

Has the car ever been repainted? That isn't an old pin stripe under a new clear coat is it?

I've seen this before.



I don't know the physical cause, but there was a shadowing left behind from a pinstripe removal that could not be removed with solvents, goof-off, adhesive remover....even wetsanding.



This is why you should charge a significant fee for pinstripe and badge removal: there is so much risk. A pinstripe could have ghosting under it, and a badge removal could result in a chip, or many chips, even if done properly with a heat gun, dental floss, adhesive remover, etc.



The customer should understand before the badge and pinstripe removal that if there is damage beneath the badge or pinstripe, the badge and/or pinstripe will need to be reapplied to cover the damage, and you will not be paying for a repaint of the damaged panels.

cause i have see cars like this before where the body shop was to lazy to remove and painted over

but since they didnt prime you could see the pinstripe but when you put new pinstripe on you couldnt see it



also you said it was smooth so this is probably the case.



i would just put new pinstripe on!
