Removing motor oil from concrete?

Does anybody have any suggestions for a product that might remove motor oil stains from a concrete driveway? So far we've only tried Simple Green and that didn't do much at all.

Thanks!

as the Simple Green full strength? Allow it to dwell for at least 10 minutes. Highest pressure rinse you can manage. If you only have a hose and municiple pressure, hold the nozzle as close to the work as possible. Repeat.

Good Luck!

You might want to rent a pressure washer from home depot if the simple green method doesn't work.

Scott - Thanks for the tip. It is too cold here for me too use pournrestore for a few months. If you have a chance to use it, please let us know if it lives up to the hype...

Thanks for the advice everybody, that Pour n Restore stuff looks like it's exactly what I need, and it's cheap too! I'll have to order some right away!

I know this is an old thread but has anyone used "Pour n Restore" and did it work? We have a rental house and the last tenant must've leaked gallons of oil on the concrete driveway. Any help or tips is appreciated!

Has no one used Pour n Restore? Looks like a nice product but I don't want to waste my money if it doesn't work.

Thanks kpounds. I bought some anyway to test on spot. I'll return it if it doesn't work. The guy at Ace Hardware said he sells a ton of Pour n Restore and he's never heard of a complaint or return yet. Hmmm- we shall see. :)

Wow this is an old thread. I've found the best thing for oil on concrete is kitty litter. Just pour some over the oil spot, grind it in with your shoes and let it sit for a day. It should absorb most, if not all, of the oil.

For some reason, this thread got me interested. Amazingly I received an email this morning about the many uses of WD-40. One of its attributes is "Gets oil spots off concrete driveways". Might be worth a try!

haha! Thanks for the feedback everyone! I did a search first and came up with this thread. If anyone has any other suggestions, please let me know. If not, it's off to the store for some kitty litter! :)

Years ago we used Lestoil to remove oil from cement...I spilt my fair share of it on my Dad's driveway...he would use Lestoil ..pour some on let it set a while scrub it and hose it off..oil spot was gone....

Go to a local hardware store and pick up some TSP (Tri-Sodium Phosphate) It will clean up your concrete in no time...however get a heavy duty broom to scrub it with..otherwise it will eat your broom alive :chuckle:

whenever I spill oil on the driveway (whilst changing oil, etc.) I always go grab my tub of Goop handcleaner, scoop some out, & smear it on the offending oil stain. It's cheap, & I always have some on hand (no pun intended). After about 10 minutes, I hose it away. Keeps the driveway smooth & kissable too!

I've used pour n restore- it works very well. Pour it on, run a leveling scraper over it, let it dry. sweep it up and stains are either gone or greatly diminished. A second treatment is sometimes needed. It also smells good- orange/citrus.

The stains I hit it with tough were not really old- maybe 1-2 months sitting on the concrete at most. One was very heavy and took 2 applications. The other was maybe 2 days old and it came up after the first application.

I get a rag and some gasoline; dump a bit on the oil stain, wipe with the rag and it has never failed to remove the oil. It will pull stains that are a couple months old as well.

Otherwise, a good strong pressure washer with a fine attachment and some patience seems to do very well also.

Concrete is porous so oil soaks down deep and once cleaned from the surface it will work its way back up in time. The best way to clean down deep is with a hot pressure cleaner that gets 1 to 3" deep. Once you have cleaned that deep and to keep the oils from coming back up you want to seal the concrete once it has dried. Best to hire a Pro Pressure cleaner to do this and not just a weekend warrior pressure washing guy.

Never never use gas to clean concrete with or anything else, gas in not a cleaning fluid, it will ignite by static elec I have seen it happen and if you don’t believe me go ask all the burned people recovering from 1 * burns
