Hello everyone, I tried to do a search on this but when I do I get a server error about memory or something.



I just purchased a 1992 white mustang GT conv. The previous owner used some type of paint to paint in the "MUSTANG GT" indentiations. I would like to remove the paint without hurting the factory white paint. I tried a clay bar but that did not work at all.



Is their a chemical that I can purchase that will remove this?
 
That is a tricky one since you have no idea what kind of paint he used. There are decal kits in various colors that you could buy and put in the indentations to cover it up if you wanted.
 
Ooh, thats a tough situation. Its really more a job for a pro, but heres a few things you can try:



Pressure washer, aim for the weak points where the new paint is uneven.

Odorless mineral sprits, hope he used sh*tty paint and it melts right off

Lacquer thinner, be VERY careful with this (mask off area, so you don't harm other paint)

Heat gun (be CAREFUL, keep the heat low, keep the gun moving, and keep it on the letters only), and hopefully they will pop out.



If the above don't work, look for a local pro. You'll probably need to 1500 grit sand out the excess paint, then buff with a rotary and wool pad to restore gloss. Its not a job for the uninsured :).
 
If I use mineral spirits or lacquer thinner is there a way that I can dilute it? Also if I use these chemicals what could I use to neutralize them after I get all finished?

How about acetone? That seems to get rid of most paints.



I used acetone to remove the black paint from my emblems and some of it got on my actual paint but it never caused any problems.
 
I plan on masking off the area and using a q-tip so their is less damage.



What about nail polish remover, would that work?



Also what is everyones recommendations on the cleanup after I do this?
 
Well I used acetone to remove the paint. I should have taken themightytimmah advice and took it to the pro's. Now the white paint is stained pink from the red paint I was removing. I tried to use rubbing compound but that had no effect at all. I will pick up some 3000 and 2500 grit sandpaper and try wetsanding it. Unless anybody has another suggestion. If the wetsanding does not work it looks like I will need the whole bumper repainted, and pray that they can match the colors.



Anybody have any advice for me to fix this problem.
