Remarks from neighbors

My neighbors just stick their noses up. I'm 24 and the next youngest is about 55 all the way up to 90; they've lived in their condos forever and now I "take over the lot with my car cleaning service". Can you tell we've fought about this before?

i have some neighbors like that too. i think in some instances, it's jealousy (they wouldn't act like that if you did their cars) because we keep are cars looking new and their's aren't. sometimes it almost seems like a crime or you get looked down upon if you're washing/waxing your car all the time. i'm not worried about it though, i'm the one who makes the car payments, not them...

My neighbors say something along the lines of "Wow... that vehicle sure does look nice. When do you want my keys?" My comeback is always somewhere along the lines of $100.00 to calm them down lol.

I used to live in a condominium complex where the average owner was over 65. They loved seeing a young person taking pride in their car.

Most had a few kind words to say and just kept strolling along.

It was not at all my intention at the time, but more and more folks started asking me about how much it would be to wash their cars. Most just wanted a good vacuuming, with a wash and wax. Very few balked at $50, so thats what I went with. This was 13 years ago, long before I started using anything costly, so maybe $3 spent in supplies.

So I would take my time, drink a few beers, listen to some tunes, and at the end of 2 hours, I made $25 an hour cash, minus beer money (:

Eventually, I started changing out windsheild wiper blades, changing oil, using touch-up paint, replacing burnt bulbs and putting gas in their cars....and I was getting paid well for doing it. These were older folks with money that trusted me, I had a pretty sweet deal going.

So my experience with neighbors at that time very positive and prosperous...

I listen to my ipod and tune everyone out now-a-days.

I too have been relying on my i-pod. Some people do have nice things to say, but most just want to tease. I know some of them think they are being funny, but really, few have anything original to say.

I still tend to be self conscious while I'm out there, but I wouldn't trade the results for anything.

Maybe it's just me, but I can't focus on detailing when I have my iPod on (or even the radio, for that matter).

None of my neighbors really say anything, but the crazy, "W T F is he doing out there again" looks are what bugs me. It's too cold to detail outside this time of year though, so if I am working, it's in the garage out of sight.

i get the *** again looks...

especially on christmas day. i was in my garage polishing away with my new UDM =D

I can' t listen to anything when I polish either, only when I wash the car or wax it.

I know & hate that "again" look too.

Everyone thinks i have a new ride when i'm detailing someone's ride, and i go along with it and the next day they ask what happen and i just say that i didn't like it so i took it back to the dealer and got my car back..............:chuckle:

In the beginning, my neighbor would also ask me everytime he saw a new car in my driveway if it was my new car. I finally told him that I detail cars for people from time to time, and showed him my rotary, and all of my stuff. He made the comment, "I'll have to slide you a $50 sometime to do my Tahoe." I didn't even bother telling him that for $50, he would ONLY get a wash at best on that beast from me.

One of my neighbor's got me to do her car and a few more want one too. Not bad if i don't have to travel to a customer's house for a detail, just 75 feet or more to do one. And i won't accept anything under 200, because most of them never got a detail before and by looking at some of them it's major swirl city........

I have an 80 year old neighbor who keeps his cars spotless, too, so he understands. Although, even he has commented -- "You've washed that car so much, I could swear it used to be a darker black." He's kidding, I hope. It's never been darker and blacker than it is now. :D

I get lots of compliments, too, but I think I'm probably a running joke in the neighborhood. Oh well, it's worth it.

I'm glad to see that everyone gets the same comments as myself. I am by no means an autopian kind of guy (yet) but I do the "crazy" things like taking off wheels, cleaning undercarriage etc etc.

Will be moving into my own house in a few months so I'll have to set the standard early :P (new construction in that area).

I work so many hours on others cars that my own is very neglected. So is my wife's car and it drives her crazy. Infact if I ever get around to doing my own car it will make great before and after pictures. Kind of sad and depressing now that I think about it. I am so tired when I get home that I just never get around to it. I could never get a magnet advertising my detailing business for my car. customers would either laugh or run.

How could you not listen to music or the radio when detailing? I am just the opposite. I have to have it cranked up. I am the fool that dances around the car playing air guitar. Sometimes I even get my polisher moving with the music.

I just realized that I need some serious help!!

When people say "mine next" I usally say that only works if I'm married to you. I do like to hear the response when poeple say I wish I had a new truck, and I say me too this one is 8 years old. Or is that paint special order? My wife likes it when people at her work ask if she bought a new car? That means I eat good that night, or something like that.

My dad always said " anyone can buy a new car, only select people know how to take care of them". I like that.

I agree 110%!! Ive always thought it was crazy when people buy expensive cars then dont take care of them. I would say 90% of the time a car is the second most expensive thing a person owns(house being first) but they dont seem to care that it looks like crap.
