Red Ferrari Mondial T

This car was my detail today while it was snowing outside. It's a 1989 and was repainted a while back using single stage paint. Overall, the paint quality wasn't bad, but I don't think it has ever been buffed. As you can see from the before pictures the paint was in horrible shape. It looked as though someone dumped sand all over the car and then wiped it off with steel wool. It took me a while to decide what products I was going to use that wouldn't be too harsh on the paint, but yet had enough cut to remove the scratches/ imperfections.

The thing that scared me the most was when I put the paint thickness meter up to the paint :scared: . The entire car was very inconsistent. Some panels were reading as low as 3.5 mils and others were as high as 18.5 mils. After knowing this I had to be REALLY careful not to burn the paint.

Here is my process:

Washed

Cleaned wheels, wheels wells & engine compartment

Buffed the exterior with Intensive Polish x2 using a light cut foam pad using slow speeds

Buffed exterior with Final Polish II usiing a foam finishing pad

Hand application of AIO

Hand application of RMG

Topped off with Meguiars #26 (something different)

Tires dressed w/ Meguiars Gold Class Tire Dressing

Interesting comparison with the sand and steel wool.

Stellar comeback on the finish. She looks showroom fresh (minus the dealer installed swirls).

How did you work on the fins? What's on the trim?

Thanks Sean,

For the trim on the bottom I used Super Blue Dressing. The trim around the windshield and the side windows needs to be repainted. The new owner said he is going to remove them and repaint them himself, so I left them alone.

I did inside the fins by hand using the same products,

Interesting pad. Who makes it? I was under the impression only 3M had waffle pads, would be nice to see other manufacturers making them.

where do you get one of those handy dandy Paint Thinkness meters? That would be very helpful for me with correcting the work on my car from a body shop...

Truly excellent, Rick! The paint looks very wet.

Interesting choice in #26, definitely one of the better waxes on reds.
