Reasonable price for David Fermani to Opti Coat a NEW car?

I think Bob nailed it, we are a brotherhood of detailers. We all have different backgrounds and some do this ful time while guys like me are part-timers. But, we all share the passion of making a car the best it can be, better than it was at the dealer on day one. And, dealing with potential customers, we all have a story or two of business we turned down for good reasons. I told my wife about this while we were detailing her Highlander together (she just learned how to clay) and she said - hey, you had a few like that guy. Yep, not with the pure gall and lack of class as douce-burger, but some that called and wanted a major detail, but didn't have the balls to say they couldn't afford it, so they make excuses and jerk your chain. So the wannabe "player" will go to some hack shop for another layer of industrial glaze and probably brag on some lesser forum about what a deal he got.



I'm thinking more about the brotherhood thing, and may change my sig to - Mess with me, and you mess with the whole hood!



Anyway, I'm one proud sonabitch to be here and in the company of you guys, thanks!

It's good to put things in blunt perspective sometimes :bigups. This is mostly the reason why I never advertised my detailing service and did every for pay job strictly by word of mouth and being approached. Its not my profession even on a part tine level and I really didn't want to deal with the low ballers or the time wasters As a result Ive done all high end details and both my clients and I completely enjoyed the results. I even taught a few process techniques along the way which I was very honored to pass along.

I did a FULL paint correction on a 1980 Porsche 911 Targa this week. SILVER and the paint was SCARY THIN!!!! ....he paid 250.00 bucks. I cant get 1700.00 dollars for a detail here in Ct. People are out of work by the scads here. That does NOT mean I dont admire those who command those dollars!!!! I dont do wheel polishing. I clean and pressure wash but thats it. Hats off to Dave, who always seems to know his stuff on this site. It took me three 3.5 hours to do the Porsche.... thats 71 dollars per hour which is roughly my rate. I figure on between 65 and 90 per hour based on what I am doing.

Please do not take offense, but "Paint correction" in 3.5 hours on a 1980 Porsche?. For me that time frame half of it would be the wash/decon possibly depending on condition and 1980 was a Loooong time ago(Year I graduated high school..............oldness I know).
 
Yeah, in 3.5 hours I'd get a wash, decon and perhaps claying.



I'm surprised someone named paint expert doesn't know about coatings.
 
3.5 hours? I think I am pretty quick, my wife agrees, but 3.5 hours? I would say in all honesty in 3.5 hours (if the customer requested paint correction and not just an AiO) I would have only evaluated the paint, washed, dried, clayed, and taken my paint readings.......and maybe, MAYBE begun test spots. That's if and only if the wash/ deacon went real well.



So I may be calling shenanigans on that correction.

Heh... you have a valid point.



Seems there's a bit of confusion with him over what a "full correction" actually is. I've had details that were less take me much longer -- case in point was the '56 'vette I detailed earlier this year, 18 hours and the paint wasn't even in good enough condition to allow for a full correction.

Ahhh, you're unbanned. I will never forget you, I was once trying to help a new guy out with the paint polishing process and telling him how some corrections can take up to 25 hours or more... and then you came in, insulted me and said it should never take more than an hour or two to polish the paint properly.



Have you ever even posted a write-up or sun pictures after polishing and an IPA wipedown?
 
I am gonna be really nice again and do the devil's advocate thing again.



Maybe when PaintXpert says "I" he means himself and his crew of 3 people?



But yea, no way full correction in 3 hours.. I haven't even begun test sections in that time.
 
I have a 2008 VW GTI, it's a fairly small car and I've had it since new so it's been taken care of. At my day job, it sits in a parking deck out of the sun and weather, it's always under a garage at home...get the idea that it's in good shape. However, when I decided to try Nitro Seal this Saturday, I washed, clayed, and then polished with a PCXP, Megs MF pads and UNO, - the polishing step was 3.5 hours - and that was just to clean up the paint and raise the level of gloss worthy of Nitro.



Nitro? Oh yeah, I had a guy turn all the way around in his seat as he rode by my car, my wife asked me to PLEASE put a coat on our daughter's car, no rest for Dad! But the result was soooo worth it.

Me thinks June Bug should UN-ban "Burgmeister/The Donald" as now we are going after other guys on his ownage thread..........doesn't seem right, and the funny quips were just "Flowing" and now they are gone....................................boooo buzzkillness.
