Obviously, a polish will remove a dead layer of paint on non-clear coated cars. What does polish do for cars WITH clear coats since it does not remove dead paint? What's the point of an abrasive?
 
It removes clear coat which removes swirls.........as long as they are not do deep..be careful you do not want to break through the clear.
 
How do you know what's too much and could break through the clear? Could using FI-II one time when the car didn't need it actually break through the clear, or does it take years of polishing ever day?
 
by hand I doubt you could break through the clear your first time unless you have biceps the size of a rump roast...



Now with a rotary it could take like 10 seconds...



TO actually know you have to take measurements of paint thickness all over the car prior ro abrasives and then make sure you do not remove more than 0.3mill.
 
There is any easy way to tell if you have gone though the clear. Take an abrasive and rub it on a car with clear and there will be no color on your rag or applicator. Now if you do that same thing to a car that you know has a clearcoat finish and you get the basecoat color on your applicator, you have gone through the clear.



I would doubt that 1 application of FI-2 will go through the clear, but it's possible. It depends on how much work with abrasives has been done to the car and what they were applied with. If more than .3 of a mill of clear is removed from the car you will have clearcoat failure. The only way to tell how much has been removed is go to a pro shop and have the total film build measured with an electronic thickness gauge.
 
Though my bicseps and shoulder muscles have been compared to those of Hulk Hogan ;) , I need to know how much polishing with an orbital is too much! You're getting me worried now, Guess My Name!!! How delicate is the clear coat, and if I just went up to the average clear coated car with a PC on 6 at hand, with FI-II on the pad, what's the likely hood of burning through the clear coat? How much is too much?!

That is a question you really can't give specific answer too. It depends on how much clear has already been removed.



It's not very likely that you would go through the clear, but it's possible depending on how much clear has been remove before.
 
So Im not sure how many of you are familiar with how drums are painted, but I was wondering if any car care products would be safe to apply to my set. Im thinking of selling it and getting a new one, so I of course want the most money I can get. They are in good condition, but I would like to apply something to take out a few light scratches and make them shine :wizard: Sorry if this is a stupid question, Im just curious.

Being a musician...I have allot of guys I know that are drummers....they have used high end waxes and even sealants on their drum kits......and I am talking kits that worth 10,000.00
