Rain-x?

Lately I've noticed that water on my windshield just kind of sits and collects, and does not run off quickly or even bead. I've been thinking of putting on some rain-x, but I have not used this stuff in many years. Has anyone had trouble with water etching on the glass with rain-x on the glass if it dries on? Does it also work fine for side windows too?

Is there anything out now that works better, and is easier to apply?

I doubt you will have any problems with Rain-X etching, Rain-X is just a wax or sealant for glass. There are some options which are probably better than Rain-X. One is Glass Science's Rain Clear, take a look at it on AutoGeek's website. Another is the product CL68 Glass Sealing Kit that Jeff Werkstat carries. See werkstat.com for more info.

Been using rain-x for year. I use the washer fluid for the windshield and the hand applied for the side windows.

I dont understand how people see in the rain without it.

Although I have a small arsenal of boutique detaling products, I still use rain X. As long as you do not put it on in the hot sun things should go well. After washing and as it wears, I often apply rain X, let haze, buff off spritzing it w/ ONR QD.

I usually put it on ALL my windows and have not had any etching issues.

I always found the best way to apply was to put Rain X on before I wash. I apply before I do my wheels and by the time I am done its all hazed. I then wash as normal. For me it really cut down on hazing with trying to remove with water and a MF.

I have used Rain-X for years. Works great for the side and back windows, but does not last very long on the windshield. I have researched a few other products and will be trying Aquapel shortly. We'll see if it's as awesome as everyone says it is.

+1...applying and then washing the car normally is the perfect way to apply. i never have to deal with streaking or buffing it all off...the wash removes all the excess and it's super easy.

Hey Everyone,

First post here. Just had to say that this is a great idea and I can't wait to try it. I've been a Rain-X user for over 20 years.

Thanks,

Eric

When I apply RainX, I do two coats. I do the first one and let it haze. Then, without wiping the first one off, I do a second coat. This allows the product to come off much easier and it lasts longer.

I have used Aquapel and it is nice, but it just isn't worth the money for me. It does last quite a bit longer than RainX application for application. I just can't justify the price for it just 1 windshield application.

I use their washer fluid and it "boosts" the RainX on the windshield and I don't usually have to reapply for about 3 months. I "boost" the side and rear windows with their new cleaner that has repelant in it.

I use RainX and love it.

I really don't have any trouble with the haze/film; just make sure you apply it thin/sparingly.

I've not noticed any trouble with water etching; if anything I feel like it reduces it because the water generally 'lets go' of the glass and can't bond or leave mineral deposits on/or in it as easily.

Generally, R-x doesn't work as well unless there is a wind source to help clear it. When I put it on the side mirrors, they just kinda drip. Unlike on the windshield and sides, where I don't even need the wipers if I happen to hit light snow in the mountains.

It has some serious alcohol-based stuff in it, so be careful with the paint/rubber trim. That's why I don't put it in the windshield washer reservoir.

I have found that it has not been kind to my wipers, leaving black (rubber) on the windshield following a couple of applications. I stopped using it cuz I didn't like seeing my wipers falling apart on my windshield.

I find that if after washing my car (which includes lightly scrubbing the wiper blades to clean them up), if I put a coat of rubber dressing on the blades, let it "soak in" in over night, and buff off the next day, my blades do just fine with Rain-X or other water repellants.

Anyone get any wiper chatter on account of the RainX?

I just purchased (about 4 weeks ago) new Innovision wiper blades. The next day I applied a new coating of Rain-x to the windshield.

We had serious rain for 2 days not that long ago and I had absolutely TERRIBLE chatter, especially on the drivers side wiper blade. I attribute this to the blade design though, as there is no structural bracing on these particular windshield wiper blades.

I've always got chatter with Rain-x.

Last week, I'm sitting there looking at the rain clouds and thinking to myself, screw it, I'll try it on the new Cobalt (I tried it on my GTI previously and it chattered). I applied it to all the windows, x2 on the windshield. Wiped everything off with water/MF. Started the car put the wipers on started spraying the windshield with water and my god was the chattering ever bad. Mind you I drove around the block and it does bead very well when your at speed but if you need to use the wipers on anything but super fast mode it chatters. I couldn't stand it so I took SIP and my Flex to the windshield to strip it.

I see all these "i love rain-x" threads but does the chattering not bother these people. I was getting a headache.

^That has always been my beef with it (the chatter), but some have told me that I was getting chatter because of how I was applying it.

I have read from others that if you put on RainX before you wash the car and essentially wash it off, you get all the beading, without the chatter. I wonder if that is the case.

Well I was going to get some Aquapel, but I couldn't fin it anywhere in the stores. So I just went with rain-x instead. I put on two coats and it seems to be doing fine.
