R.I.P Jack Harrison

Mr. Clean

The Man Who Knows The Man
Dead at age 97.

WHO??? (I know you're asking)

Mr. Harrison was the last living survivor from the group of Allied prisoners who executed a plan to escape from Stalag Luft III during WWII. (Again, you ask what? where? who?) This was the real life German prison camp escape events which were portrayed in the 1963 Steve McQueen classic The Great Escape. Mr. Harrison was reportedly number 98 in the roster of 200 prisoners preparing to escape. Unfortunately (or fortunately in this case for Mr. Harrison) only 76 men managed to escape before prison guards discovered the breakout. Of the 76, 50 were ordered executed by Hitler; 23 were returned to custody. Only 3 men reached safety.

Great history lesson. It's very cool knowing information such as this. A brave man to be sure.

It was very interesting to read the brief bio in the obit section in today's paper. Also heard a brief mention on a local radio station.

We have all heard the members of that age demographic referred to as "the greatest generation". I am a believer. My Dad is from that generation, though not quite that old. My hope is that when I reach my life's end I have become half the man my Dad is. I still have a long way to go.

I'm thinking your further down that path than you give yourself credit. :D

R.I.P. for sure to Mr. Harrison, and there are too many superlatives to say about that film to talk about them here, except to say it's an all time favorite of mine...

I wouldn't even hazard a guess as to the number of times I've enjoyed that classic. Great cast of characters aided by an incredible story line; made even better knowing it was based on real events.
