quiet exaust

Scott, did you have a custom exhaust done with a Magnaflow muffler? Cause I have all magnaflow, including their resonator, and it is very quiet.

I wish I could make a sound clip for you guys.

Custom job by the premire exhaust shop in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. 2.25" pipe, 18" resonator, Magnaflow straight thru muffler and twin 2.5" tips (so no megaphone effect like you get with those coffee can tips). There was a constant drone at freeway and cruising speeds. Once I switched to a turbo style muffler, the exhaust is almost inaudible inside the car when driving around at a steady speed.

Just don't ever go overboard like this!

Offroad X pipe and 3" Bassani Catback will sound quite loud.

Oooops I thought this was stangnet.com ;)

When I had my rice burner I had a Magnaflow muffler on it. A Dynomax super turbo muffler might be another option.

ROFL I've seen that car before on a website making fun of ricers. I showed some of my more car savey friends and they were saying that that guy must have massive power loss from that muffler, being that there's no back pressure. I think that was what they said. Ugh it's too early in the morning. Nuff said

My suggestion (and just short of 2 cents) is to return it to stock. I mean for crying out loud its a civic..! IMO, Nothing makes a car more enjoyable than looking good and a smooth quiet ride. Even if you have a Camaro or Corvette I would suggest the same. Most aftermarket exhausts only give the impression of adding performance due to the sound but really hurt performance and low end touque. (torque is what you need on a street car unless you want to cruise around at 5000rpm) I've been there and done that, I had 3 or 4 different exhausts on my Corvette and in the end the OE setup was the best for drivability, fuel milage and seat of the pants acceleration.

Avalanche...you have to remember that now-a-days these four bangers are high reving engines and staying at the top end is normal. No use trying to find torque in them.

I have a mugen twinloop, super quiet, stealthy, and top quality construction. A little pricey, but well worth it IMO.

Avalanche, yeah I do see what you're saying. Well my main gripe is that it's A) a Civic EX, not a sports car, and B) it's an automatic. So my whole reason for putting the loud muffler on was for sound ( I got sweept into the whole fast and furious thing lol:o ). So yeah to answer your laughs now, I was a ricer...all show and no go. I've been through the whole "maybe I'll swap the tranny", and "maybe I'll super/turbo charge it", but I'm so busy in school now that I'll be getting my bachelor's degree in a year (finally :D) and then off working on the masters degree, so I'm bringing my car back to stock specs and will pursue my need for speed with something like a BMW or Vette when I graduate. The civic is a nice reliable get-around-town kinda car, so I'll leave it as such. No disrespect to the guys with SI's and manual EX's, those can be made fast, with enough $ and time. I've seen a bunch of 4 banger civics with a couple thousand bucks worth of mods smoke Vettes and Vipers.

I was just thinking that if an aftermarket muffler that was quieter than stock existed then I would check that out. But from what I gather that's not going to be the case, maybe some mufflers might be AS quiet but not quieter, and since I still have a brand new OEM muffler & resonator sitting in the rafters in my garage I might as well weld it back on.

Thanks for all the information guys, you all saved me hours of internet-sleuthing to find these answers. :wavey

I'm not sure if this is a common mod, but it certainly is for BMW's. Could you put an SI exhaust on that's a bit more sporty and might sound a bit better, while still maintaining stock appearance and driveability. I have an M3 exhaust on my car and its got nice shiny smaller dual round tips and sounds a little throaty. Not sure if there is any advantage for the SI exhaust.

Hmm that's an interesting idea. Odds are I could pick up an SI exaust off of almost anyone for next to nothing since most have the sporty straight through mufflers, like mine. I'm not sure though that it looks or sounds any different than the oem exaust on a 00 EX.

Whilst many parts are interchangeable exhausts can be tricky. Manufacturers are often changing the routing or layout of the pipes for different models or years - why - no idea, but it would be worth checking before buying anything.

Given that you want a quite exhaust and you have one, why spend more money

Oh yeah I'm gonna set up an appointment for midas once all this blasted snow is done with. I'm curious about the Si exhaust idea but I won't go that route.

I agree that the Magna Flow is loud. I have a few friends with them, and all but the guy just out of high school complain about the sound.

If you want quite, yet still want a performance exhaust then I'd suggest Borla. The Borla's that I've heard aren't much different than stock in sound....a little better though.

Also, why not replace your AEM with a Comptech icebox?

Heh, $. Well like 4DSC mentioned and something that I never thought about, the intake really isn't that loud when I don't step on it. And when I put sound reduction material down then I doubt it'll be too obtrusive at all. And since I really don't have the entire system such as full cat-back exhaust, and headers to open up the breathing of the engine, then intakes won't do to much. Atleast from what I gather from other sites, the intake mostly just adds sound without many other mods that allows the intake to perform to it's full potential.

could not agree with you more. I had a 89 Mustang that I put headers, h pipe and flowmasters on. I swear I lost some low end, and the drone around 2500-3000 RPMs made my ears ring. I enjoyed the low end power and nice V8 sound the most. Totally lost both when I modified. Spent a lot of money bring back to near stock. I now have a 01 mustang that I have left completely stock. Love driving around and hearing the exhaust but I love how there is no drone or low end power loss. I think stock exhaust is best. My 2 cents, bring it back to stock or SI exhaust...

check out thermal r&D, i used to have their stealth model on my 2000 civic. Real nice piece, not too loud but not as quiet as stock. I dont' think anything will be as quiet as stock. Also, the thermal stealth had an amazing finish, stainless steal from end to end. def check em out before u decide. good luck.

hi all...

I have a 00 EBP Si... with a 'home brew' local shop crush bend 2.5" cat back on it. I used a 36" cherry bomb for a resonator and a 17" supertrapp for the end muffler. and the b16 is LOUD AS HECK! and the road drone is crazy. But get into a tunnel and she sounds awesome. It has been this way for almost 2 years. I want it quiet now. I have the AEM, crane cams and a compech 4-2-1 but I'll put the exhaust back to stock or something quieter. I was thinking of using an electronic cut out to make it "Ricer Loud" when I want to.

I think that the Si "b" pipe would fit I do not know if the hanger locations are the same as your current "b" pipe. The factory Si b pipe is around 180 beans. I'll get one soon for mine. Good luck with yours.

Only partially true. If one does a complete airpump (which is what an internal combustion engine actually is) and electronic work-up (ECU tables changed for performance and I do not mine HyperJunk) these mods are very beneficial to not only power (performance) output but also fuel mileage and drivability.

The trick is doing any mod correctly and most of all completely. Increase air intake (ram air), re-program ECU for changes made, Headers (tuned) to extract increased intake, cat-back and low restrictive muffler to complete the deal.

If not done correctly it is impossible to match the manufacturer's tested component compatibility. :xyxthumbs
