Questions about Carpet Dying?

Being that my car is a convertible and it spends a fair amount of time with the top down the Sunvisors have faded. They were Graphite Grey and now well extreamly faded!

Is this something that can be dyed?

Is this something thats worth dying or spending a few bucks and finding 2 new sunvisors?

Will the end result match?

Where can I pick up the products to do something like this?

How long can one expect to spend on a project like this
 
Don't have a lot of experience, but I do have recent experience. My dad cleaned some bird poop of my Taco carpets with bleach (very long story ;). After two years, I finally forgave him and decided to dye the spots ont he carpet. Bought some SEM plastic paint/dye at the local body shop supply. SEM comes in about 30 colors, mostly greys.

To do carpets, you spray and brush so the carpet doesn't become still. It looks better, but I have to admid that it doesn't completely match. The original carpet has much more shine and sparkle than dyed area.

I practiced spraying on a box just to see the spray pattern and how thickly it is applied. It covered the cardboard pretty well, so I would expect it would cover vinyl/plastic very well. A nice smooth satin finish. If your sunvisors were originally very shiny, you may want to try the SEM on an inconspicuous spot firsts.
 
Well my sunvisors are infact covered in a relitivly thin meterial! I really didn't pay too much attention to them because while sitting in the car you technicly can't see them. But while walking away from my car the other day I over heard someone say "look at how faded his sunvisors are" which pi$$ed me off because my car is pretty flawless to someone who's not as anal as most of us here are!

Where else can I pick up a product like this?

Is it expensive?
 
I just did a quick search on ebay for sunvisors (not specific...don't know what ya need) and it came back with 5 pages of hits. you may want to look and see if you can get you a new set.

I had figured that the dye job would probably be an easy answer. The problem is finding the right color mix. Along with the fact that I only need enough to do the two sunvisors.

Unfortunatly I already looked through ebay to no avail. Im also afraid that they are going to cost approx $60.00....I don't think the Dye would be that much!

I've been using this system for about 3 years. The SEM dyes are OK for small spots or areas, but for about the same amount of cost per car, and about 20 minutes of labor, the carpet will feel natural, look evenly matched....

Remember, too, that paint dyes will make the fibers stiff, and eventually, (from experience) the will become brittle and fall off, leaving a thin or bald area in the carpet.

You probably have a professional in your area that can take care of the problem better and for about the same final cost.
There is a guy that does leather, cloth, carpet repairs and dye jobs for the high dollar car dealers in our area.
My 1981 Corvette which is a driver, not a garage queen, has had the carpet redyed once and is about due again. (The red carpet is turning pink/orange again.) The guy that does it actually mixes the dye to match the carpet under the floor mats, then dyes the entire carpeted area. He isn't cheap, but for a couple of sunvisors, the tab probably wouldn't be that bad. Maybe $20-$30. I think the front carpet and the cargo area of the Vette was around $100 about 8 or 10 years ago. It is a lot of area when you include the cargo space.
It might be worth getting a price before you get into a mess that ends up costing you as much as having it done right the first time.
