question regarding acetone

hi there,

i own a 2006 civic si and i removed the ivtec decals on both sides of my car. one of the decals i removed wasnt taken off as well, leaving some sticker residue. i used acetone to remove it, but now the paint in that area is very dry and squeaky. did i peel off the clearcoat?

When you say dry, is the appearance different? Acetone is a pretty potent solvent but I'm not sure a brief application would effect catalyzed clearcoat.

I think it's quite likely that you did; that's like shooting a 10-gauge loaded with buckshot while hunting chipmunks. Acetone is serious stuff; next time, try something that's designed for removing decals.

You may not have removed all the clear coat but you certainly did damage it. Hard to say without a picture. Did you apply some of your favorite cleaner wax over the stop to see if it would improve things?

oh boy . . . i owuld polish the s^&% out of both panals quick and top it with somthing fast . . . you may not see damage, but im sure thee is some there . . .

If all you did was wipe a small amount on, I would imagine your CC is OK. The reason its dry and squeaky is because you are working with a bare surface that has no oils or waxes on it. The same thing happens when you use a polish or compound, the surface is very "grabby" and squeaky.

I would try polishing and waxing over the spot and seeing if that helps at all.

02ZTSfocus has a point -

if you didnt rub very hard you clear is probably just that - bare clear.

does the surface appear discolored from the rest of the panel - any haze?

yikes! the car is in the shop right now from a small accident and ill be getting it back wednesday. i was planning on giving my car a thorough polishing/waxing when i get it back, but should i give special attention to that particular spot when doing so?

Acetone will soften paint quickly. If you didn't let it dwell, you should be ok. If it turned cloudy from too long exposure, try to polish it out.

Yep acetone is very harsh, i cant comment if you compromised your Clear.....i will say this i had a freind who had a beatiful 92 Xsi(integra)jdm- black ext. "swirls free"taken care by yours truely he loved that car so much and his ex gf, well gf at the time, they got in an argument and broke up dont know the details but she knew how much he loved that car more then her, then few weeks later passed and one night he left his vehicle out of the garage coming back late from a party and when he woke up he seen then end results of what acetone can do to a paint job end of story...

good luck and hopefully it can be polished out, i know all of us cringe when anyone has or hears of defects because we all want the best for are rides...
