Question on 1994 Corvette paint?

BW, some dubbers have put vaseline on their wheel to protect them. Rain-x dries slick but not oily as vaseline would.

Got an email with a customer regarding his 94' black corvette. Before I get back to him I just wanted to get some background.

I believe even older corvette clearcoats are very hard, would this be correct? Any issues with them for those who have worked on one? Like to have some info before I respond.

thanks -Dave

94 Vette

You would be correct. The paint is pretty hard. I have a coulpe of clients who have vette's and 94 is one of them. I did his red 94 last summer for the first time, it was in pretty bad shape. Didn't take any pictures, but the car was sitting outside for years before my client bought it. If I remember right I ended up with 105/205 combo worked the best with flex 3401. I have also done a 95 and I have 96 scheduled for the future. But the paint in these years is all the same....hard! Not as hard as SAAB though. Not sure if you have any experiance with SAAB but whatever time you quote you might as well double it on SAAB's. My $.02 Dave, nice work on the R8, one of my clients just ordered the V10!

Hard as a rock. Corvettes back to about 1990 have rock-hard clear. I always start with PC/M105/LC Orange flat pad, heavy pressure, slow passes/KBM speed 5 or 6. It will leave some hazing. Then switch to 205/LC white pad moderate pressure/slow passes, speed 4 or 5.

GRIND AWAY!!!

Wow my experience has been almost exactly opposite. I find the 90-95 Vette's fairly soft and easy to buff... :toetap05:

I don't know Todd... They were all made in Bowling Green from 82 on. Possibly the black is different from the other colors. (???) I've done the late 80's Vettes and found them pretty easy to polish, but starting somewhere in the early 90's the clearcoat formula changed. I could be off by a few years...:out::biggrin: (When you get old, all the years kinda run together.)

I havent done any Corvettes, but if the paint is as hard as the '02 Jet Black Lexus LS430 (95k miles, never detailed) I just did, then you may need to consider a purple wool foam from PAC and M105, finish with M205 on L/C White, all processes done with Makita 9227C

I tried the Orange/105 combo on this Lexus and it would hardly budge the scratches.

The purple foam wool took them all out quickly and finsihed down to where the White/205 just jeweled it a little clearer.

Good Luck, Dave.
