Question about carbon fiber

How can I tell if a carbon fiber piece (actual carbon, not a laminate job) has been clearcoated or not? I think the piece has been (it's relatively shiney), but I'm not entirely certain. There's something holding me back making me think it isn't clearcoated yet.........

Never saw cf that wasn't cc. I guess you could paint it if all your concerned is about weight.

CF can be clear coated or not, if it is not then what you see is the shine from the epoxy coating...most CF parts you can buy for your car are going to be clear coated, CF parts from the big name manuf, some will be gel coated as well. You can treat them like clear coated panels just harder to polish. You can call the manuf to see if it is actually cleared or if you are really concerned you can clear it yourself. Most companies do clear so the epoxy does not yellow from UV rays.

if you can feel the texture, its not cleared. if it feels like smooth glass or paint, its cleared!

I used to have a carbon fiber paintball barrel. You couldn't feel the actual fibers, but you could feel the weave. If you could feel the weave, make sure NOT to use a towel with any sort of nap, including microfiber. You risk unraveling the fibers. Use a paint squeegee if anything.
