Protecting the frame in winter?

I just moved to Arlington VA from the Pacific Northwest. I hear the winters here can be pretty brutal on your car and was curious how I can protect mine. I have already done the waxing but I hear people talk about protecting the frame and undercarriage from rust with a silocone spray?? Will this work and if so what type do you use and the brand?

I live in Northern VA also. It does snow here at least 2-3 times per winter. The problem is they put down a ton of salt even if it flurries outside. I personally dont think it is necessary to protect the undercarriage. If it does snow, and they drop salt, rinse the undercarriage as soon as possible after the snow melts.

I use NO TOUCH WET TIRE SHINE on my frame. Spray the thing down with simple green and rinse, and then when it drys, spray it on the whole thing. I usually use one can on my truck frame. It lasts about 2 months of regular rain/washing, and it makes the undercarrage look brand spankin new!

The major problem with salt is melting. If the Temp. stays below freezing then it slows rusting greatly. Being from VA. i bet it melts right away, i would rinse as soon as possible. You could try products like Fluid Film, which do not readily wash off.

I live in Sask. Canada and the weather usually stays at or below freezing most of the winter and the rust factor is wayyy less than, i'll say Ontario or Quebec, sorry guys, which usually is extreme weather and salt.

Another thing i have noticed is people with a garage and go from outside to inside will show more salt damage.

I laugh at the winters you guys get in VA. 2-3 times it snows down there. That's how many times it snows in the summer here. :grinno:

My recommendation is to find a good touchless car wash that has an undercarriage spray. Wash the salt off that way.

So bascially at the end of winter or when the snow melts wash the undercarriage off? Just you would not want to do it while it's still snowing then you would have one big ice cube!! Thanks for all the advice great place to learn.
