Protecting 14 Vette black wheels-advice?

The new 2014 Vette wheels can be had in black/ clear coat paint. It is strictly car paint and not any type of fortified clearcoat or basecoat. Hence after a few months, they can get pitted and chipped. I'm interested in any ways that I could recommend to other owners to protect these wheels, a film seems to be out of the question due to the contours, the only thing I can think of is something like Dupont Imron which is a tough paint, or powder coating. I'd be interested in any prevention/cure that you experts can come up with...

Powdercoat would be your best bet IMO. I considered the black wheels when I ordered but ended up going chrome as I felt that they would hold up better with some care. Any custom paint shops in your area? They might have to scoop on the more durable paints.

Also can use FK1000P , it s what I use on my ride , my mother s new 2014 CTS & brther s 10 CTS also , great job on my end . easy to maintain & wash .
 
good info from a friend at the vette site...sounds like an option I'd explore - didn't know you can now get clear powdercoat..

Actually they now have clear powder coat. My wheels have 3 layers, powder coat black, silver paint then powder coat clear.

you could easily do a carbon flash base with a powder clear. Call TPJ, TPJ, they can fill you in on what's possible
 
Glen, I have never experienced the chipping/pitting you say that you're getting. What kind of roads are you driving on? This is the first I've heard of this happening.
 
I would say that Opticoat 2.0 or the newer version would serve you well. I know everything shows on Black, but I have it on stock Subaru Rims and Smoke Acura Sport rims and it holds up great.

Same thought here; IMO the solution for most any wheel is using a coating. I do use regular LSPs like FK1000P one some too, but that won't offer any real protection like what's being discussed here.

But I too wonder about that "chips and pits" concern, I've had painted wheels on plenty of cars without experiencing that sort of problem. But if the finish is that fragile, I wouldn't look forward to getting new tires mounted on 'em!

Overall, this sounds like something that oughta be avoided when spec-ing out a new Vette; get wheels with a more practical finish instead. Refinishing nearly-new wheels?!? I wouldn't want to open that can of worms.
 
Soft paint on the black 'vette wheels is a known issue on the Corvette forums. I have had numerous cars with painted wheels and never had such a problem even over 90,000 miles.
