Hmm, dunno. Here in HU I have a modest 1,075 sq ft house and my taxes were about $3,500. I bought it brand new and got discounts on it for having a child, this and that. Normally it would have been double that.

Insane! I cant tell if I am looking at houses in bad neighborhoods, or if we just take it so far in the back end here in NY...

Not looking to relocate, just grab some cheap stuff.

Insane like "good" or insane like "bad"? I don't know because I never bought a house in the US.

My house is about 1700 sq. ft., and I pay about $2500.

My in-laws have about 3300 sq. ft. and pay about $5500.

I was just online looking at foreclosures and was surprised what property taxes were in parts of the country for houses in the 3,500-5,500 sq.ft/ range.

J, are property taxes low in Westchester County?

top p.-

There is a BIG range due to the presence of large corporations. Westchester is small in size.

I saw houses in my price range (when looking last year) with taxes that ranged from $8,000 - $30,000 per year.

I cant complain about the schools and services I get for my dough.

I doubt there are many Detailers that can afford 3500+ sq.ft homes? Property taxes in Florida have been going down drastically in the last few years because it's primarily based on Assessed Value.

Property value here in Hawaii is High but taxes are low. A 750k house pays $400 a year in taxes. Maybe that's why our schools suck.

You are lucky they are dropping on their own. I'd have to call the town to come over and re-assess, then wait for the outcome in next years property bill.

I guess we are conditioned in NY to pay through the nose. A realtor we were out with told me, "A good rule of thumb when looking for a house is to be prepared to spend $1000 per month in taxes per every $600,000 of house. ($600k = avg. $12k, 1.2m = avg $24k, etc.)

That's about what it is here in Jersey along the NYC train corridors, too.

$400 PER YEAR! That is unreal! See, these are the shocking facts.

I pay an fair amount for tax, but I think my towns schools are bad after the 8th grade.

If I end up staying here that long, we will go to private school.

My house is 1980 sq. ft. The taxes were around $2400 last year. There is no heavy industry or even "box" stores in my town while a few miles down the road there are lots of incidents of both and taxes are much cheaper there.

I own a duplex and live in one of the units. The combine property is about 3100 sq feet and my tax bill is about $1,500. Granted property values in Louisville KY are less than most of the country. I paid 160,000 for the duplex. However I got it on the cheap. The previous owner was diagnosed with breast cancer in the advanced stages and needed to liquidate it quickly. I believe the duplex would appraise around 195,000 today.
