As I'm writing this, I am EXTREMELY pissed, so pardon me if I come across being a bit of an a-hole.

To make a long story short, someone hot boxed my parents 2006 Odyssey and I NEED to get rid of the smell FAST b/c I am getting it appraised in the morning at the dealership along with some other maintenance. I am going to try steaming the headliner tomorrow. The interior is leather so thankfully the smell isn't in the seats. It's very saturated in the headliner and a nasty residue is on the windows. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

So much for keeping that new car smell!

Steaming the headliner should help, but you are going to have to clean all fabric and plastic. I use an odor neutralizer for smoke cars (Fabreeze like stuff) but it's next to impossible to get out of a headliner. We have a loaner vehicle that go hot boxed last winter and it still smells to this day. Your best bet might be to over power the smell with another scent.

What is hot boxed??

Googled it and found this...

hotbox

v. 1. to smoke marijuana in an enclosed space so that it becomes filled with smoke; 2. to take a long drag or a quick series of drags on a joint or cigarette.

If that's what it means, I'd use something like CG SoFast Odor Eater

thanks for the responses.

I picked up an odor eater a few weeks ago but never used it, perhaps this is a good time to do so.

Using an odor fogger while the a/c is running in the recirculate setting works best for me with removing malodor.

Did a 99 528I a couple weeks ago that smelt of pot and cigars(blunts) after the interior detail and carpet extraction, I turn the car on with the a/c full blast and circulate and let off a bomb.

The car was a dealers and I checked it about a week after the detail and smell was still inactive and still smelt like FRESH LINEN

Was it cigarette or marijuana that they smoked in the car? If it was weed, I would roll down the windows and drive around for a while, maybe spray a sent in the vents between the window and the hood to with the AC on.

Weed doesn't "stain" like cigarette smoke. BTW, don't ask how I know, I never inhaled.

The quickest and easiest solution would be to find someone with an ozone generator. Run it for 15-20 minutes and the smell will be neutralized.

LOL@ Todd. I don't think you'll need to go as far as deep cleaning the headliner, it's not a penetrating smoke like cigars/cigarettes. Try an odor fogger can... it'll fix the problem quickly and easily.

smoke a cig in the car, it kills weed smell instantly, then u just have to worry about a legal smell to get rid of, lol

thanks for the replies everyone!!!

I don't know where to get the fogger as I'm in Canada and supplies can be hard to get here.

I was also thinking about getting one of those scented wafers and putting it infront of the cabin air filter, then running the A/C on for a bit tonight after I 106ff and opti-seal the van.

Hopefully 30 mins should be enough.

Try the odor eating zeolites, these are the same stuff used in filtering aquarium water but usabel also as odor absorber. Had a car reeking of pet smell and 1 day with the stuff removes all the odor, not masked it.

In high school - no pun intended, my car was often the Cheech & Chong vehicle. I don't know about now, but we'd just burn some incense in the ashtray afterwards. BTW, that was a loooong time ago, older, wiser and responsible now.

I used to smoke (cigarretes and pot) in the car quite often, and I have never had a problem with smell? But then I usually crack a window. A long fresh drive after a wipedown and carpet wet and vac should do it.

The question in my mind is, how does a van just get hotboxed? The neighbor kids break into the garage?
